Pope says condoms sometimes permissible to stop AIDS

The moral backbone was abstinence, and now that has been thrown out for a material solution. Guess what? If people don’t have sex they don’t get STD’s crazy idea huh?! It wasn’t the Church’s job to teach the path that allowed fornication and rejection to life, it was it’s job to show the most righteous path for others to follow.
Did you even read the article? Or are you just going by the media spin?

The pope agrees with what you’ve said 100%. He is totally against the idea of condoms as a “solution.”

I would suggest that you take a closer look at what he actually said.

I was responding to what someone said above in which they were very against what the Pope said.

It wasn’t directed to you.
I see that, but this is a board, so all comments are part of the conversation. What I’m asking is what did you mean by what you said—are you supporting condoms and contraception as some kind of “good” thing? I don’t understand what you were suggesting, so I am trying to understand what you meant.

Because the Church has already stated that artificial contraceptives are sinful to use…always.
To say “always” is not accurate. As the US Bishops state:
[A woman who has been raped should be able to defend herself from a potential conception and receive treatments to suppress ovulation and incapacitate sperm. If conception has occurred, however, a Catholic hospital will not dispense drugs to interfere with implantation of a newly conceived human embryo.
Hospitals should develop appropriate protocols to determine whether administering emergency contraception would have an abortifacient effect. Tests are available to determine whether ovulation has occurred.](http://www.nccbuscc.org/prolife/issues/abortion/ecfact.shtml)
And as the Vatican stated in response to the Bosnian crisis:

Jimmy’s views are no more concise or clear than ours regarding this matter. The truth is the Pope was asked this question:

Are you saying, then, that the Catholic Church is actually not opposed in principle to the use of condoms?

The Pope gave the following seemingly affirmative response (which I believe will be retracted soon):

She of course does not regard it as a real or moral solution, but, in this or that case, there can be nonetheless, in the intention of reducing the risk of infection, a first step in a movement toward a different way, a more human way, of living sexuality.
Two blog responses to Pope comments:

He did not say that it was permissible in some cases; rather he said that in the case of someone already engaging in an objectively immoral act, which can in no way be justified either with or without condoms, the use of a condom “can be a first step in the direction of a moralization.” Notice the crucial difference in what he actually said and what the media has portrayed him as saying. He is no more condoning the use of condoms than male prostitution.

calledtocommunion.com/2010/11/did-the-pope-condone-condoms-in-certain-cases/

So what does he say? He says that if your intention is to reduce the risk of infection then that can be a first step in a movement towards a more human way of living sexuality.

It is as if the Pope said “beating your wife is never okay but if you decide to beat your wife less often then you are moving in the right direction” and the headline comes back “Pope condones wife beating”.

This has been the last straw, and there was other issues that were leading up to this; theologically about the Church and God, and personally.

True but, it’s not a moral thing to do to lie and let people get infected with something that WILL kill them.

Also I am very sorry that you feel this is the last straw for you. :(:(😦

I surely hope that by your statement that you do not mean that you are doubting that God exists! God is out there!

I will pray that you do not leave the Church. You can still be a Catholic and disagree with some aspects of the Church. For what it’s worth; I’m gay and have a boyfriend and we both are Catholic and love our faith. PLEASE DON’T LEAVE THE CHRUCH!!
:(:(:(😦

Yes he did
Do you speak to Saint Augustine on a regular basis? Does he converse with you?
Um yeah, no disagreement here
Thank you for conceding.
Let’s see now: I don’t advocate aborting a rape child since it was not the child’s fault, but for you to call that a “gift” is a depraved and sick sado-masochist thought. You think rape is so lovely and wonderful, go and talk to some rape victims, or go experience it yourself and come back to me and tell me how much fun you had. Serial killers have often claimed that they were “helping” their victims and were doing “good” for society. It’s people like you that make us Catholics looks like total sexual hypocrites and masochist freaks to the rest of the world and I am sick of being associated with this kind of nonsense you are advocating.
I never said that rape is a gift. Rape is a horrible crime of violence against an innocent victim. I did not mean that rape is a gift. But a child conceived via rape is a gift. I knew a woman who was raped at age 13. She kept her child and loved her very much. She looked upon her child as a gift from God.

All children are gifts from God. All are precious creations of a loving God. And I stand by my words. If I were raped and became pregnant as a result I would keep my child and love her and would very much thank God for the gift He had sent to me in love. The child is not only the offspring of the rapist. The child is also the offspring of the mother - in this case that would be me.

I have great empathy for rape victims. I have my certificate in Sexual Assault Crisis Victim Counseling. I also have a Master’s degree in Psychology; although the emphasis was on research methods and animal behavior I took several classes in clinical psychology and considered going on to get my Ph.D., Psy.D, or M.D. I was injured instead and now I’m disabled. I learned a lot during the classes I attended in order to receive the certificate and the M.A. Several women who had been sexually assaulted attended one of the certificate classes and spoke to us. Not all had been raped. One had been grabbed. That also had happened to me. Three times and one of those times it was done by my dentist as I sat in the chair. I was also date-raped. I know the shame I felt even though I had done nothing wrong. I remember how I cried so much after being date-raped and how the rapist, a man I trusted, had betrayed me. I was mortified and humiliated beyond belief. And I know that the shame, guilt, fear, rage, dissociation, and all the entire gamut of emotions and reactions that other rape victims go through is a million times greater than the shame and humiliation I felt.

It’s bad enough being a victim, even though my experiences only involved having my breast grabbed and one case of date-rape. It makes it much worse to be made a victim again by you. All you had to do was ask me to clarify my post. I would have been happy to do that. But you didn’t even give me the chance. Other posters here have noted that I meant the child was the gift, not the rape. It was obvious to them. I don’t know why it wasn’t obvious to you.

You have no right to call me the names you called me. You have no right to label me the way you did. You have broken forum rules by being uncharitable and you really went way too far. I’m not going to let you get away with victimizing me. I’ve had quite enough of that. You have been reported to the moderator.

I have nothing further to say to you.

The more I have thought about this, I have come to feel that one of two possible things will result:
  1. The Pope will make a retracting clarification.
There is nothing to retract because He didn’t say what you continue to insist He said. Hopefully He will make a clarification though.

OK. Well, IMO yes I feel condoms and contraception are a good thing sometimes.

BUT in my post I was just referring to the fact that I think it’s a good thing that the Pope has finally admitted that condoms do prevent HIV/AIDS. I wasn’t talking about my own opinion on condoms/contraception in that post. ONLY that I was glad the Pope has finally started telling the truth.

I want to thank everyone who knew I meant that the gift was the child, not the rape. I’m sorry that the thread went off-topic. I didn’t want that to happen.

This is the first time I ever admitted to being date-raped. It happened decades ago and I still feel shame. I’m crying now but I’m trying to hold onto what dignity I have and I want you all to know that I very much appreciate your support of me.

I let him make me a victim again. But enough is enough.

And every child is a gift from God. Every single one - even those who are conceived via rape. I stand by what I said.

Thank you all so much!

The thing about condoms is; people won’t start suddenly not using them when they do have a return to the faith because it was the Church who told them to use them in the first place!

No offense to you but I have little tolerance to cafeteria Catholics; when I live in sin at least I don’t lie to myself and say the Church is wrong and I am in the right…

As for infection; yes I feel it’s wrong to lie and make up percentages that condom failure is higher than it really is. That doesn’t mean the Church should be calling out for the use of condoms, even in extreme situations such as HIV and AIDS. Like others have said we may as well be fine with legalized abortion since it’s healthier for the woman having it performed on to use a doctor than a clothes hanger.

Adam, out of Catholic charity I must absolutely tell you that you cannot engage in homosexual activity and stay in the stay of grace. Homosexual activity is an intrinsically disordered act and a mortal sin. If you care about this other man and he cares about you, you must not touch each other or give in to any homosexual inclinations that either one of you might have. God will reward you both for obeying His Will, even when it is hard to do.

Your reward in Heaven will be great for obeying God’s Will and not offending him, and staying pure in complete abstinence, which is wait He is calling you to do.

I’ve read 3/9 pages so forgive me if this has come up.
But what the Pope said was an example that might be morally good, is that a GAY PROSTITUTE uses condoms to prevent his spreading AIDS to an unknowing public.

In other words, a condom in itself is not intrinsically evil. It can be used for evil if it’s used between a man and a women to prevent pregnancy, for the whole reason being that it preventing a sperm from reaching an egg.
In male-male sex, there is no possibility of pregnancy, therefore, the use of a condom is not evil, as a matter of fact, it can be used to prevent a symptom of evil(disease) from spreading to a good person along the chain who had no idea someone 20 times removed had sex with a male prostitute.
This is a good thing is it not. Taking it exactly for what it is.
We are all here good thinkers, if we dumbed down dogma so that everyone would understand right off the bat we wouldn’t have anything good written down.
Yes, it is being blown out of proportion and the common laity won’t get it, but that is their fault, not that of the Church.

Hi honey. I just want to say how sorry I am that you were violated that way. :(😦

I know that I do not have the words to take your pain away, no one does, I just want you to know that I am so sorry that horrific event happened to you.

I know that I can not tell you how to feel, but you shouldn’t feel shame.

IT WASN’T YOUR FAULT!!

It was the pig’s who raped you!:mad::mad:

Don’t “try to hold on to onto what dignity I have”. You don’t need to do that. YOU HAVE ALL OF YOUR DIGNITY!!!

That pig didn’t take your dignity.

And it’s OK to cry, it lets your emotions out.

Stay strong honey. 🙂

So, what’s next?..

In certain circumstances it is ok for women to be ordained…
In certain circumstances is is ok for gay couples to get married
In certain circumstances it is ok to have an abortion.

Scoff now, but my understanding has always been that condoms are a form of birth control and the Church cannot change its moral teaching on birth control.

Everyone is saying that this isn’t ex-cathedra, but I have always been taught the pope cannot error in matters of faith and morals.
It is my understanding that the church is against birth control for the sake of birth control. However, from reading in these forums-including the apologetics section- that even what is originally intended as birth control CAN be used for other medical reasons. Specifically, the pill. The pill is allowed to be used to treat irregular periods, bleeding problems etc. when its intended use is NOT birthcontrol.

That was a very nice way to put your statement. No sarcasm or anything it really was.

I do, however, disagree. But thank you for saying it in a way that was not even remotely judgmental. 🙂

God Bless you! You are absolutely right–all childern are glorious gifts from our Father—and while you might be crying right now, God is looking down on you and smiling, and all the Angels and Saints are as well! Bless you for standing up for His little ones!

Remember, dear, that whatever dignity you felt taken away from you by the man who raped you, his attempt to make you less of what you are was absolutely futile! No act, not insult, not rape, not even murder can take one single drop of your human dignity, nor that of any one of us, God’s special creatures. Our dignity is given to us by God Himself, and NO ONE can take it away! You are not a victim: those who try to undo what God Himself has done will always, always, always fail. Do not feel ashamed, but instead direct that energy to God as love for Him and his Son!

God bless you!!!

If anyone would like to read what the Holy Father actually wrote, the book excerpt can be found here: splendoroftruth.com/curtjester/2010/11/ginger-factor-the-pope-approves-of-condoms/

It’s clear he is not defending the use of condoms. At most, he is saying that within the context of an immoral act in which contraception is already impossible, there is a possibility that using a condom to prevent infection could be done with a good intention.

Anything more is just spin.

Hope the Vatican clarifies this as soon as possible.
It’s too late. No clarification will be sufficient to get the genie back in the bottle now. I am beyond furious that Holy Father was so incredibly careless.
