VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict on Tuesday linked the Church’s opposition to gay marriage to concern about the environment, suggesting that laws undermining “the differences between the sexes” were threats to creation. The pope made his comments in an address to diplomats in his yearly assessment of world events. The main theme of the address was the environment and the protection of creation.
“To carry our reflection further, we must remember that the problem of the environment is complex; one might compare it to a multifaceted prism,” he said.
“Creatures differ from one another and can be protected, or endangered, in different ways, as we know from daily experience. One such attack comes from laws or proposals which, in the name of fighting discrimination, strike at the biological basis of the difference between the sexes,” he said.

😃 Some of the greenies have forgotten that we’re also part of Creation. Glad the Pope reminded them.

Maybe those opponents of marriage in California between a man and a woman only, should get a copy of the Pope’s statements. Except I forgot, the Pope is irrelevant, only their opinion matters. But in reality logically one can’t distort truth and the Pope is only relating the truth. But for many the truth is irrelevant. More reasons to pray. Especially for Portugal that just legalized gay marriage. Our Lady of Fatima must be cranking up the prayers for this country! Let’s add ours.

Those people don’t believe in Genesis or that God created us as He said He did. Heck, not even many Christians believe in the Book of Genesis as written, but rather in evolutionary explanations, where homosexual activity, death and other sinful activity were always there for millions of years.

The Pope and Catholics and all Cristians must understand that the doctrine of creation is irrelevant to a modern world that believes in naturalistic evolution whether God is tossed in or not. Thus the Bible cannot be considered reliable in matters of creation or morality, thus they rely on humanism and their own opinion.

For them, homosexuality has alwasy existed in the natural world which has always been the way it is. In their minds God intentionally created them that way and created homosexuality from the beginning. Ergo it is natural.

The Pope’s words will fall on deaf ears.

What is needed is to explain why homosexual behavior is contrary to natural law. There are serious consequences - physical, mental, emotional, etc. when engaging in behavior that is abusive and contrary to how our bodies are designed. Too often we talk in abstract terms of the behavior when the actual description of what takes place would cause revulsion. No need to get graphic here, but a good analogy is when parents tell their young children not to stick things into the wrong places.

Homosexual behavior is contrary to natural law, that much is clear. But homosexuality, promiscuity, a slow metabolism, a low tolerance for alcohol, ADHD (which my daughter has), etc. are all genetic variations. They are not unnatural, as they appear in nature, but that doesn’t mean we should fornicate, eat until we explode, drink ourselves into a stupor, or run around like wild animals. Self control and temperance is something we should all strive for, and chastity is just one aspect of that. Those with homosexual impulses have merely be saddled with a cross that the rest of us don’t have to bear. We have other crosses.

Natural law, from what I understand, does not so much refer to the laws of nature, but to the laws that have been written onto the heart of mankind.
Human nature is not the nature of the beast. We have to recognize that we are not animals, that snakes and other animals are not the patterns for us.

With the animal kingdom, we share in the instincts of desires that brig us pleasure. Our minds, and our reasoning, and our dignity speak of another order of laws, natural to spiritual beings only.

The snake in the garden tells Eve that God may have said that we are not to touch that fruit, but… (does not the desire to touch that pleasing fruit come from God too)?!!
For the animal kingdom, this is of course true. Instincts are from God, and instincts are the voice of God— for animals.
For people, our creation is of a different order. Our desires are not to be in the service of our instincts, but in the services of God’s creation.

Marriage is the sanctification of our desires. Marriage is the means to cooperate with the
Spirit in order to create life, with God.
It is not just about our instincts and desires anymore. It is about creating a better world, through God.

The Pope did not mention homosexuality once in his speech.

He did mention as an “attack on all creation” legislation that would give Intersexed people - those whose existence “strikes at the biological basis of the difference between the sexes.” - basic human rights. That may not be what he intended. It is what he said though.

“Creatures differ from one another and can be protected, or endangered, in different ways, as we know from daily experience. One such attack comes from laws or proposals which, in the name of fighting discrimination, strike at the biological basis of the difference between the sexes,” he said.
“I am thinking, for example, of certain countries in Europe or North and South America,” he said.
I didn’t visit the Vatican site. Perhaps it has the full speech. I think a reasonable person could interpret the above as referring equally to gay marriage legislation & legislative attempts (“laws and proposals”) which are initiated under the umbrella of anti-discrimination efforts.

In fairness to the OP, the title of the thread did not say that the Pope talked about homosexuality.

It would appear that you are claiming that Homosexuality is a “Genetic” disorder. It seems to me that I recall many scientific investigations into this, and there is no proof that it is a “Genetic” disorder. It is a Cognitive disorder, which means it is a learned/trained disorder.

Then you go on to say that is “not unnatural”. The Popes disagree with this. So do I. It is unnatural, that is the basic beef I have with this lifestyle.

There is no proof that it is either a genetic or a cognitive disorder. It appears to be a combination of the two; a predisposition that only comes to fruition in certain people.

Perhaps I’m splitting hairs with this one, but I believe that there is a difference between something being unnatural (not appearing in nature) and being against natural law (being against God’s designs for humanity). My point was that just because something is natural does not mean that it is good.

I might have the urge to beat or kill someone (which is natural), but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t control that urge and leave them in peace (which is good). I might feel an attraction for a married man (which is natural), but I am called to guard my thoughts and be faithful to my husband (which is good).

We’re not animals, after all. Our ability to overcome our natural urges and act in a civilized manner (free will) is one of the many things that sets us apart from animals. I think confusion about this is one of the great scourges of our times. “Natural” has come to mean “good”. We should all just do what feels good; what comes naturally.

Sorry, I can’t believe that what a legislature or court does will “stop creation.” Civil authorities cannot even stop earthquakes, much less creation.

Well the Greeks and Romans openly practiced homosexuality (though not gay marriage) and creation didn’t come to a halt.

But they didn’t change the laws and structure of marriage in order to accommodate it. That’s the cardinal difference.

Well, depends on what you mean by “structure of marriage.” Married men could freely engage in homosexual activity without cultural disapproval. I’d say that goes against the structure of marriage.

Yes, but every time homosexuality became a common practice they civilization died out soon afterward. Coincidence? I think not.

Not exactly sure you could say that. Greek culture lasted quite a while as did the Roman Empire.
