POPE BENEDICT XVI has called on young people to take steps to save the planet “before it is too late”. Speaking last weekend at the end of an Italian youth gathering at the Marian shrine of Loreto near the Adriatic Sea, the Pope told the young people that one of the “most urgent” responsibilities of their generation was to protect the environment and help reverse ecological destruction.
“Before it is too late, courageous choices must be adopted that are capable of recreating a strong alliance between humans and the Earth,” the Pope said on Sunday to a vast outdoor crowd. The remarks were only an aside in a much broader message to the young people, but they constituted some of the Pope’s strongest comments to date on ecological questions. “There needs to be a decisive ‘yes’ in defence of creation and a strong commitment to reverse those trends that risk creating situations of irreparable degradation,” he said.
The two-day “Agora” was the first major event of a three-year initiative by the Italian episcopal conference (CEI) aimed at reaching out to young Catholics. The Pope’s environmental comments were made in support of another CEI initiative - the second annual “National Day for the Safeguarding of Creation”, which is commemorated each year on 1 September.

What? No comments or conspiracy theories about scientists with agendas? No comments about global cooling? Its been two days people. Pope throw ya a curve ball? By the sounds of it around here, you would have thought that rejection of the Kyoto Treaty was an ex cathedra statement or something. Did the cool aid run out?

Although your comment was the height of charity, I feel non-the-less I must respond. No where in the article did it mention the Pope specifically commenting on Global Warming. He did talk about irreversable ecological damage which doesn’t have to include Global Warming. Believe me, we’re messing up creation in quite a few other ways.

regardless, pascal’s wager is as far as you need to go with global warming.

I’d rather see the Pope’s actual talk rather than some interpretive news story bended to the publication’s desire.

Also, I am still waiting to meet the first person adversely impacted by global warming.

You do understand the fundamental flaw in Pascal’s Wager?

It doesn’t address the possibility that you might bet on the wrong god. It is recognition of this flaw that keeps so many of us from setting our hair on fire and jumping off the nearest cliff – however Politically Correct that might be.😃

well that’s true, but i fail to see how that affects its implementation on the issue of global warming.

GW is real and we do something about it. good.
GW isn’t real and we do something about it. still good and at worst neutral.
GW isn’t real and we don’t do anything about it. neutral.
GW is real and we don’t do anything about it. we’re screwed.

unless you’re suggesting the possibility god wants us to destroy the world. which is still irrelevant.

The flaw in this is that if you applied Paschal’s Wager to all possible threats, we destroy all resources. First it has to be plausible and fixable. Read Jimmy Akin taking this notion to task…

You missed the key possibility:

Climate change is real and we do the wrong thing.

Back in the '70s, when they were predicting Global Cooling, there was a serious proposal to use the Air Force to spread lamp black on the polar ice caps, changing the earth’s albedo and warming it up to prevent a new ice age.

Now, with a mere 30 years’ hindsight, tell me if you think that was such a good idea?😉

😃 your post made me laugh.

I think what the Pope said and the sentiment is inspired and an answer to many prayers, thank goodness and it’s about time 👍

Kind of funny seeing people arguing against Pascal’s Wager, on a Catholic site, no less.😃

Ooh, conspiracy! What if they actually secretly did that, causing the current problem? :hypno:

Now you know the truth – round up all the greenies you know, and head for the poles with whisk brooms and dustpans.😃

What proposals to stop global warming do you see as potentially disastrous?

Generally what the alarmists are suggesting is just the plain old traditional virtue of temperance, which can’t help no matter what. I agree that some questions can be raised about developing countries and whether they should be held to ecological standards that might harm their poorest people, but in terms of day-to-day behavior for Westerners it couldn’t hurt us all to use less electricity, walk more and drive less, etc.

Over the weekend, our priest devoted almost half of his homily to praising Al Gore and citing lines from *Inconvenient Truth. * I do not believe the GW claims are gospel and felt the Priest was out of line.

It will be interesting to hear what the Pope has to say.

The earth’s environment has been in flux ALWAYS, just because its “warming” now does not mean its the cause of man — I think the science being practiced here is the same they did hundreds of years ago with Eclipses and how those with knowledge gained wealth and power by scaring the population.

All that said, I don’t have a problem with being good to creation, and taking care of our resources - regardless of the changing temperature of the environment.
