VATICAN CITY, January 10, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - For the second time this year Pope Benedict XVI has focused on an “educational emergency” in passing on true Christian values regarding marriage and family to new generations.

In remarks addressed to Italian civil dignitaries at this morning’s traditional exchange of New Year greetings, the Holy Father reiterated the concern he expressed in his New Year’s Day message that “it seems ever more difficult convincingly to present new generations with firm certainties and criteria upon which to build their lives”.

Speaking on New Year’s Eve, he warned that many people, “especially the young, are attracted by the false exaltation or, more accurately, the profanation of the body and the trivialisation of sexuality”.

I applaud the spirituality and guidance of the Holy Father for speaking out. Too many simply turn their heads on younger people, and sadly, many older people, who now co-habit. Older people do it because of their familiarity with sexuality from marriage. Younger people do it because they are not being taught as they should and sad to say, many of our parishes are not really preaching morality from the pulpit. This must be done and those of us who are better informed need the intestinal fortitude to speak out. Once when I spoke at a parish about abortion, people complained to the pastor because I was speaking about political issues. When the pastor confronted me, I politely informed him that it was not political, but moral and if his parishioners did not know the difference, he is failing them. I have not been asked to speak at that parish any more. But, I have now seen where many of the older parishioners are leaving to go to more Orthodox/Conservative parishes. Keep praying people. Prayers are needed.
