Pope Benedict XVI speaks on issue for first time since his butler’s arrest: “I wish to reiterate my trust and encouragement to my closest collaborators.”

At the end of today’s general audience, the Holy Father spoke of the recent developments in the Vatican that led to the arrest of Paolo Gabriele (above), his butler, on Friday when private Vatican documents were found in his possession.

Doesn’t give the reason for the bulter’s action. Was it for the money or was he a disgruntled employee? Doesn’t say much for the reporter either.

I believe the butler lived in the Vatican with his family. How sad for them.

Butler’s motives will only likely be revealed through trial.

How is it that a publishing company can sell a book that has stolen private property included in it? Besides being completely unethical, I would think this would be illegal.

Leaked/stolen but authenticated material is a journalistic staple and a well known PR trick, frequently used for mutual advantage via ‘controlled leaks,’ although apparently not in this case, or for hostile exposés. An ‘in the public interest’ defence is often is declared by source and reporter. The ethics and morality of the arrangement are a question of conscience. Who is to blame, the person who leaks the information, or the person who publishes it or both?

OR the people who willingly pay for the book and read stolen material. Stolen is stolen , if it is a crime to knowingly purchase stolen property shouldn’t it be a crime to read material that is compiled by stealing someone’s intellectual property? Oh sorry that is probably free speech right?

I read this in The News Manual- a professional resource for journalists:
“There are also legal dangers to consider when using leaked documents. They might, for instance, have been stolen. It is usually an offense to receive stolen property if you think it could have been stolen, even if it is only a few sheets of paper.”
