What about manufacturers of SUVs? Coal miners? Oil drillers? Policemen and soldiers carry weapons. Does the Pope exclude them from the Christian family too?

Just War is no longer Catholic Doctrine?

I am sure this gives the victims of ISIS warm-fuzzies.

Pray for the Holy Father!
I hope this isn’t against forums rules, but sometimes I think, he doesn’t think before he speaks!

:doh2:

God guide our Shepherd.

This is a rather confusing comment. Could it be a translation question - meaning manufacturers of weapons of mass destruction rather than common defense weapons? I predict a clarifying statement from a Vatican official in the next few days. 🙂

Well, he did speak of the Holocaust.

The Nazi Weapon Act of 1938 barred Jews from owning firearms. Seems to me that opinion is a little skewed.

Arm manufacturers not only build weapons with the intent to kill, but profit from their sale. While there’s nothing wrong with protecting one’s nation or family, do you really think it should be a multi-billion dollar business?

ISIS rose to power specifically because the “Just War” doctrine wasn’t followed. Remember, one of the required elements is that the war cannot result in a greater evil, but that’s just what happened. The removal of Saddam Hussein under the Bush administration and later our support (albeit indirectly) of the Syrian rebels. Many modern wars, at least concerning Western involvement in them, directly lead to the rise of groups like ISIS.

Yup. I agree.

What’s wrong with profit? Aren’t workers worthy of their wages?

None of which was foreseeable in 2002. How do you determine before a war is fought that it will result in a “greater evil”? No plan survives contact with the enemy, or as Mike Tyson said more colorfully, “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth”.

Yes, workers are worthy of their wages, including higher minimum wages, especially from billion-dollar corporations. (I just couldn’t resist.)

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. CAF would be wise to issue a ban on OP links about the Pope unless they are from a Catholic source.

Can anyone tell me that Huffington Post is more accurate about the Pope than Lifesite news?
I don’t know what Lifetime is but Huffington Post, Washington Post, National Catholic Reporter and New York Times have a long history of antagonism with the Church. I have personally found that quotes from the Holy Father Francis have been out of context or even downright wrong.

From the way they tell it, Cardinals Kasper/Marx and the German prelates are the Synod and will introduce homosexual marriage and readmit divorced and remarried Catholics to the communion rail. According to Vatican releases, prelates from the African continent (who are very conservative) out number Germany’s prelates 9 to 1.

I guess “who am I to judge?” only applies to some folks.

Anyway, I’ve seen pics of the Vatican Armoury. Nice newer Sig 550s they have. And Glocks with the keys right on them.

I seem to hear that quite a bit with this Pope. Has there been a strike by translators?
Several sources say the same. I would be surprised at a mistranslation. We simply have a Pope who says some … interesting things.

People who manufacture weapons or invest in weapons industries are hypocrites if they call themselves Christian, Pope Francis said on Sunday.
Francis issued his toughest condemnation to date of the weapons industry at a rally of thousands of young people at the end of the first day of his trip to the Italian city of Turin.
“If you trust only men you have lost,” he told the young people in a long, rambling talk about war, trust and politics after putting aside his prepared address.
“It makes me think of … people, managers, businessmen who call themselves Christian and they manufacture weapons. That leads to a bit a distrust, doesn’t it?” he said to applause.
He also criticized those who invest in weapons industries, saying “duplicity is the currency of today … they say one thing and do another.”

So who makes the weapons carried by the Vatican Swiss Guard?

Read the OP’s article. That statement is nowhere to be found. However , I continue to be disappointed by the Holy Father’s ambiguous language.

It is a good thing that the pope does not post on any internet forums. Denying people are Christians when they state that they are Christians is something that is deemed to be outside of the rules of charity that govern us.
