Why do you think he didn’t use the word “Catholic”?

I suspect he may have a dual purpose, if, indeed he used the word “Christian” intentionally and with purpose in mind:
(i) to call to mind that we, as Catholics, have brothers and sisters in the various Christian denomination; and
(ii) to invite Christians of various denominations to listen to his message, as a shepherd’s voice to his sheep.
