Pope shames Brazilian church for Catholic exodus.

It is also true that there is very little REAL Cathechesis not only in Brazil but everywhere.
Most of us are really nominally Catholics and would probably fail the oil lamp test.
Remember the parable?

The Holy Spirit is giving us a kick in the sheens expecting that we wake up and start DOING OUR JOB :o
First by LIVING like REAL Christians so that THEN we can Preach the Gospel.
Like St. Francis of Assisi did.

Some of the comments by ex- or non-Catholics were so… sad. Won’t say more on that.

I feel like Pope Francis is saying what I have heard from so many for so many years! I hope the bishops heed his words and encourage priests to foster many activities both inside and outside the church building! It’s so awful when people who want to do things are held back by pastors, parish councils, and politics 😦 (Note: not a comment on my current parish!)
 
Yes, Pope Francis, Yes. Let us Know Jesus, Love Jesus, Praise Jesus.

you mean how they convince poorly catechized catholics that they aren’t “Saved” and aren’t christians?

I am hoping for a Catholic Revival in Brazil after WYD…and better Catechism!

I believe he means how we need to have a personal walk with Jesus, know Him, really Love Him ! When you know Jesus you do not have to ask, is this a mortal sin or is this a venial sin, you know “sin is sin” and the thought of sin is repugnant ! You walk with Jesus always !
This is The Way !

Thank you Jesus for Pope Francis ! Prayer, the Sacraments , and Mercy leads to a closer walk with Thee. Amen and Amen
 
I’m more interested in the headlines that Yahoo! keeps posting about World Youth Day. The media are clearly fascinated with Pope Francis, but still can’t seem to bring themselves to speak well of the Catholic Church.

So we have headlines like,
“Pope shames Brazilian church for letting faithful go”
“Pope speaks to youth alienated by church’s sins”
“‘Rebel’ Pope urges youth to ‘make a mess’ in dioceses”
“Pope Francis condemns sinful priests on Brazil trip”

Not long ago, I heard someone say (Maybe it was on Catholic Answers? I can’t remember.) that someday soon, the media are going to remember that the pope is Catholic. I wonder how it’s going to play out when they do.

The mainstream media loves to use sensational titles like that, and with Christianity in general they love to emphasis the negative.

I think that is what Pope Francis is saying, it is not good enough for Catholics to go to church every Sunday, receive the Eucharist and think that is all they need to do to. We have to live the Gospel, not just hear it on Sundays. This means helping the poor, helping out in the community, evangelizing with good works, teaching at our parishes, etc.

My ‘favorite’ media representation of the Pope so far is the nickname the “Slum Pope” (dunno if you’ve seen this anywhere) to emphasize his caring for the poor. So they pick the least-honorable name they can think of for it. What a joke the media is.
 
I would not take this article so seriously. Proof as below:
Francis took a direct swipe at the “intellectual” message of the church that so characterized the pontificate of his predecessor, Benedict XVI. He said ordinary Catholics simply don’t understand such lofty ideas and need to hear the simpler message of love, forgiveness and mercy that is at the core of the Catholic faith.

This is what happens when we let the secular media interpret things for us. They would like to paint a picture of a conflicted, infighting Church, rather than a Church that is trying to combat the rising secularism and anti-religious hatred. Instead, read proper Catholic sources, who understand the Pope’s remarks in context as a true successor of Pope Benedict XVI rather than a rival.

That’s how many Protestants “win souls” in this country so I would imagine so!🤷

That’s exactly my point. They love to emphasize anything negative about the Church, but they are still fascinated with Pope Francis; they have nothing bad to say about him. But it’s an interesting interplay, between “the Pope is great” and “the Church is bad.” At some point, one of these is going to give way to the other. I’m interested to see how that plays out.

Francis offered a breathtakingly blunt list of explanations for the “exodus.”

“Perhaps the church appeared too weak, perhaps too distant from their needs, perhaps too poor to respond to their concerns, perhaps too cold, perhaps too caught up with itself, perhaps a prisoner of its own rigid formulas,” he said. “Perhaps the world seems to have made the church a relic of the past, unfit for new questions. Perhaps the church could speak to people in their infancy but not to those come of age.”

As a practicing Catholic I completely agree with this. The Catholic Church needs to take a look in the mirror instead of looking for blame elsewhere. He hit the nail on the head.
