I love that the Pope does this, but so do thousands of other Catholics. I just had breakfast on Saturday at McDonald’s with a homeless drunk I met at Mass that morning. We don’t have much money at all and my wife is expecting a child this week. But I didn’t hesitate to spend ten bucks on egg McMuffins for the guy and then hug and sit with him for fifteen minutes listening to his delusional rants.
Did the media herald my heroism? Nope, and thank goodness, too. It isn’t heroism, it is following Christ. The media goes nuts over a pope doing this, but misses the simple faith and charity of the rest of the Church, while calling the Pope person of the year and the rest of us bigots.
I read so much Catholic media about what a saint our holy father is. And I think he is. But let me humbly suggest that if you have enough time to write an article patting the Church on the back, you have too much time on yours hands, and should probably be using that time to help the poor and vulnerable.
