Pope should resign, says O’Connor
The pope should resign because he is anti-Christian and has brought Catholicism into disrepute through his handling of the paedophilia scandal, according to the Irish singer Sinead O’Connor.

In a film being shown on Channel 4 to coincide with the papal visit, she describes herself as “Catholic by birth and culture” and a campaigner on child abuse for more than 20 years.

O’Connor, who once tore up a picture of John Paul II on an Irish television programme, said: “‘Catholic’ has become a word associated with negativity, with abuse, with violence, but the essence of Catholicism is beautiful. The fact is, tragically, it’s been brought into disrepute by the people running it.”

Like we should listen to a washed up. liberal entertainer:shrug:

Since she tore up the picture of JPII on Saturday Night Live, no one with any type of intelligence has taken her seriously.

I know I haven’t.

Well, then.

If an anti-Catholic pop singer says so, then by all means.

“O’Connor should stop talking about religion and disappear, says Corki.” 😃

“I love men,” O’Connor said, “but I prefer sex with women and I prefer romantic relationships with women.” Hot Press music magazine

“I haven’t been very open about that, because I haven’t necessarily been terribly comfortable about being a lesbian, O’Connor said. But I am a lesbian.” Curve magazine in 2000

well, o’connor can think what she wants. the holy father is the vicar of Christ. i think he has done a tremendous job as the pope. i also think he is doing what is right by the church as a whole.

It’s difficult to imagine someone whose opinion on the matter I would value less. She’s not a member of the Church (because of being “ordained” to a breakaway “Catholic” sect that has, oddly, both Tridentine-type services and women “priests”). She did, eventually, apologize for ripping up a picture of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live (while yelling “Fight the true evil”)–better late than never. Anyone who could possibly refer to our holy Pope John Paul II as “the true evil” obviously has emotional issues. Her views on the curent Pope are not solicited.

I sincerely hope that God grants her healing for the abuse she suffered as a child (which was at the hands of a family member, not a member of the clergy). However, she seems to feel that the mere allegation of abuse is conclusive, without requiring that any impartial person or people should determine that abuse has actually taken place. It’s quite understandable, given her history, that she should be irrational on this issue, but until she can show that she can be rational, I’m not sure how her opinion could carry any weight with anyone.

She’s Catholic ad aeternum, but she’s not in communion with the Church.

What does her being a liberal have to do with it? - (if she is one. I don’t know what that means in terms of Irish politics.) Her remarks would have been objectionable and uncalled for even if she were a die-hard conservative (again, taking Irish politics into account.)

I agree. I don’t agree with what she says or what she stands for, but I can understand there is a lot of pain behind everything she says and does.

Pope should reign, says O’Connor
The pope should reign because he is Christian and because of his handling of the paedophilia scandal.

“Catholicism is beautiful. The fact is, tragically, it’s been brought into disrepute by the people who don’t understand it.”
Fixed. 👍

I’ve got a question to pose to Sinead O’Connor:

‘If the Pope were to ‘resign’, to ‘whom’ would he tender his resignation?’

I get so sick and tired of these whinging liberals!

She’s washed up, anyway! Why should we pay attention to what she says?

[sorry…it’s my half-Irish temper that’s flaring up…and my ‘other-half’ the German side that wants to defend our Shepherd]

She is a spoiled brat. She does not believe in the Catholic Church, she is at least a fallen away Catholic and she can’t sing either. Her attitude may as well be anti-Catholic, as she has no belief in the Pope or the Church, so why even care what she says!

She’s probably doing this in part for publicity because she can’t sing.

Actually, he doesn’t “resign,” he would abdicate his position.

How is her statement either liberal or conservative?
She’s washed up, anyway! Why should we pay attention to what she says?
The same can be said of Presidents Clinton, Bush I, and Bush II, but people still pay attention to what they say.

The fact that the media give such weight to the public opinions of inconsequential celebrities is something that has always annoyed me.

I recall reading a headline once that read, “JOLIE SCOLDS PRESIDENT”. And I thought to myself, “Who cares?” It might as well have read “Aniston lectures Pontiff” or “Seacrest chastens Ban Ki Moon.”

I’m sure Angelina Jolie and Sinead O’Connor have the right to express themselves, just as I do, but should that really usurp my right not to have to hear about it? If Sinead O’Connor expresses an opinion about the Church, is it really newsworthy? If Angelina Jolie expresses an opinion concerning a sitting president, does it merit a news headline?

To me, the answer is a very clear “no”.

Is this the whacko Irish singer with the shaved head?
Yes.

The shaved head, the voice that’s almost as pleasant to the ears as a bunch of cats in heat, and the endless catalog of songs about divorce, bad relationships, breaking up, divorce, etc. etc. etc.
