Yep, she served time in the Magdalene Laundries, which may be one source of her anger.

But her religious zig-zags (the pope photo, then getting ordained by a traditionalist group, then calling for the pope’s resignation) suggest she is deeply conflicted and in pain.
what are the Magdalene Laundries? i hate to admit it but i’m being lazy right now and i don’t want to look it up ~ sorry

Advice from Ms. O Connor rates about the same respect and consideration as advice from Moe, Curley, and Larry. “Spread out”.🙂

Onyx, here is a news article from 2003:
As it turns out, the women had been virtual prisoners, confined by the Catholic Church behind convent walls for perceived sins of the flesh, and sentenced to a life of servitude in something called the Magdalene laundries.
It sounds medieval, something that happened hundreds of years ago, but, in fact, the last Magdalene laundry closed just over two years ago. And as the story was firstly reported in 1999, revelations have shocked the Irish people, embarrassed the Catholic Church and tarnished the country’s image.
They were given new names by the nuns to help them break from their pasts. No one knows how many women were sent off to the laundries. The religious orders refuse to make those records available, but estimates range into the tens of thousands.
The church was the only authority under which they were held, as Norris explained. “I would have rather been down in the women’s jail. At least I would have got a sentence and I would know when I was leaving,” she said.

She was a victim of the system called the Magdeline Laundries which are an abomination by themselves. From the articles i read a few months back she is trying to stick with the Catholic religion she was born into. Here’s the editorial whe wrote in March that explains her viewpoint.

It is getting tiresome to read that anyone who has a disagreement on any issue at this forum must be some kind of crazy liberal.

“O’Connor should stop talking about religion and disappear, says Corki.” 😃
As an entertainer she is a good, even great. That’s her opinion, of course, and she is entitled to it. I would not quite ask her to “disappear,” but I DO agree it is very arrogant of her to try to push her ideology on others.

And nobody HAS taken her very seriously for years. She has a history of being very “anybody who disagrees with me is a hateful person who is trying to stifle free speech.” As such, she has imposed “isolation” on HERSELF.

Oh, well. Keep on keeping on, Sinead. You’re not doing your legacy any favors. 😦

I don’t deny that she does indeed have a legitimate source for being “conflicted” and in “pain” regarding the Church—it’s the way she EXPRESSES that pain that ticks people off.

Do you seriously think the Pope is going to resign over this??? Seriously???

On what charges??? That he followed Church teaching and implemenented policies to prevent further abuse from happening??? 🤷

Isn’t it kind of arrogant of her to be calling for this??? Was it ok of her to tear up the picture of the Pope so many years ago on National Television?

And then accuse those same people who criticize her for it of being intolerant???

Someone who is not even a Catholic (apparently) in good standing???

What do you want the Pope to do, ViaDolorosa???
Cover himself in ashes and do mortify himself publicly???

She also said a Nun gave her her first guitar and encouraged her to play it. I think deeply conflicted is probably the best way to describe it
I think she cherishes what was good in a bad experience.
i remember when she ripped up the picture of JP. I didn’t know anything at all about her and didn’t bother to learn anything. Just some singer acting out. It wasn’t until I read her editorial in context of the abuse scandal that I finally got it. The sex scandal was not an issue here when she did rip the photo. It became a scandal many years later.

One question mark works for me.

In reading that article, I thought that the magdeline Laundries reminded me of what used to be called “Reform Schools”, and “Homes for unwed mothers” here in the states. While I’m sure her treatment there wasn’t a vacation, I don’t think it was intended to be since she was sent there because of poor behavior.

Also, I find the timing of her article (March 28,2010), very closely coincides with the release of one of her CD’s. (Music of Ireland: Welcome Home, released March 2, 2010)

Purely coincidental? I doubt it. To many people in the entertainment industry, all publicity is good publicity. It keeps their name in peoples minds.

I don’t doubt she had a turbulent childhood, many of us did. But there are too many things with her that just don’t add up.

It could have been a career move. I never did follow her career. But, it was also in direct response to the Pastoral letter the pope addressed to Ireland in regards to the sex abuse finding in that country.
If you research the Magdeline Laundries they were pretty bad.
I’m not defending her. I do understand she has a lot a baggage. Maybe we should pray instead of …

I would not be surprised if there is an attempt for financial gain. Some of those with contrary views to the Papal Visit are on book launches and tours. Then the rest are those self-interest groups attempting to seek funding and fame. For all their protestations, they are surely making a buck out of the Papal Visit.

The Magdalen Laundries were horrible institutions to some but, there were also those who benefitted from the shelter it gave. Unfortunately, and much like prisons, only the bad side of institutions which are often highlighted by films.

Knowing what has become of Sinead O’Connor now makes sad viewing of her video “Nothing Compares to You”, which propelled her to fame over here. And, I agree with you that maybe we should pray for her and for the many other Catholics who have left the Church for many personal reasons. Those of us who remain faithful will not share their views but, nevertheless, we ought to remain charitable even when they have ceased to be. We can be firm with our criticism but, at the same time, we can do that with charity. Perhaps, in time they will return home. Remember the story of the 80-year old man who returned to his Catholic faith after 60 years?

Yes, and my spidey senses are tingling in regard to the whole thing.

O’Connor and the like can moan and groan all they wish, however, it wasn’t John Paul or Pope Benedict who committed the sin. Yes pedeophilia is wrong and the Catholic Church should denounce such things, which they have, however, don’t blame the Popes. This is like asking our President to resign because some elected officials in Washington engaging in sex crimes.

God hates the sin but He loves the sinner.

Peace to all:highprayer

Clearly Ms. O’Connor has suffered terribly in her past. She is deserving of our prayers and our sympathies.

However, the aforementioned Washington Post article is rife with many of the oft aired false statements about our beloved Pope’s career before sitting the Chair of St. Peter.

I cringe at the horrors suffered by Ms. O’Connor when she was young, but that does not give her license to repeat statements that have been disproved many times over.

She has been “ordained” a “priestess” and is excommunicated.Pray for her soul which is in mortal danger. And for all entertainers who think the world breathlessly awaits their next “pontification” SHUT THE HECK UP !!!
