If we could only keep the evangelicals out.

Here’s a vivid example of what we are facing in Africa. I was once in the airport in Detroit and I over-heard this group of three men (one American Southerner, and 2 Africans). So this American was counseling these Africans (all missionaries I suppose) about ways to convert Catholics in their territory. He was talking about the Catholics paganism and their “ignorance”, and how they needed to show them the true way to Christ.

I really wanted to go up to them and say “Keep your paws off the Catholics!” But, of course that wouldn’t be helpful. . .

Anyway the True Church is having to contend with these folks and I hope that they can hear the voice of Christ in the Holy Father’s message.

I pray for the Bishops and Priests fighting the good fight in Africa.

I see two important needs here.
  1. We need to evangelize our people well so that they can educate the Protestant evangelist.
  2. We need to help well meaning Protestants understand that many of the things that they believe are Catholic are not Catholic at all. They are misconceptions.
Bishop Sheen once said that thousands of people hate what they believe Catholicism to be, but only a handful know what Catholicism is.

Many of these missionaries honestly believe that they are saving Catholics from some form of paganism. The problem is that they don’t understand Catholicism.

I’m always amazed at how many good Protestants are surprised when Catholicism is properly explained to them. They may not jump up and convert, but they go away with something to think about. Men like Archbishop Sheen and Fr. Benedict G. are very good at disarming Protestants. Instead of challenging them, they simply correct their misconceptions and answer questions calmly and factually.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
