In his written comments for the new Thai ambassador, Chaiyong Satjipanon, Pope Benedict denounced “the scourge of AIDS, prostitution and the trafficking of women and children”-- evidently referring to the sexual tourism that flourishes in that country. The Pontiff brought up the AIDS epidemic again in his comments to Namibia’s Peter Hitjitevi Katjavivi, noting that the Catholic Church offers the most effective means of curbing the spread of the disease: "namely abstinence before marriage and fidelity within marriage."
