Here we go again, the Daily Fail. I think there’s now an anticatholic article a day in the mainstream papers. Always taken out of context, and unfortunately may push away the ‘cafeteria’, lukewarm catholics, as they do not verse themselves about the church’s teachings and take such news with knee jerk reactions and start to wonder why they are catholics or become ‘make-up-your-own-rules’ catholics. As i did myself before exploring the richness of the catholic faith.

It’s understandable why those struggling to conceive would think about doing this, but all in all, temptation aside. I hope they all manage to bring children into their lives the natural way as intended by our God.
He suggested that this was the attitude that underlies the field of artificial procreation.
Sperm or egg donation and methods such as in vitro fertilization are banned for members of the Catholic church.
The emphasis on science and ‘the logic of profit seem today to dominate the field of infertility and human procreation’, the Pope said.
But he added that the Church encourages medical research into infertility.
Why does he encourage the research still?

He encourages research in the hope that medical conditions preventing natural conception can be cured.Just as he would encourage research into any medical condition that affects the mental and physical health of human beings. As a person who has suffered badly from the effects on infertility in a close family member let me assure you the cures cannot come fast enough.Did you know you can grieve as badly for a child you never had as for a child you were blessed with.? , "walk in someone else’s shoes " a good motto

How can science cure infertility? Without genetics?

Maybe you need some lessons in a few of the causes of infertility.Genetics often has nothing to do with it

I actually like the Daily Fail on occasion, they can have cute animal stories. Though this one, of course, is just one cut above crude propaganda, and you’re right, they are without doubt anti-Catholic…they are just as anti-CoE to be fair. Better than the Guradain though.

The thing that always gets me are the awful, awful comments. It is as if a certain group are in wait, salivating, for their chance to spew venom against the Church. I suppose all the comments do prove one thing though…

…they have broadband cable in hell.

Daily Fail? What are you talking about? I’ll have you know that the Daily Mail is third place in quality of journalism and journalistic integrity behind only the (sadly deceased) News of the World and Fox News.

Infertility often has nothing to do with genetics. Some causes can be cured with medicine and even diet. So there is much reason to continue researching and much hope for many people.

I wasn’t thinking of people who have low fertility, but those who are born infertile. I always thought that there was nothing that could be done.

I understand. Very few people are born sterile. Most infertility is really low fertility.

One example of the type of infertility research that the Church would not object to:

Some infertility is caused by polycystic ovary syndrome (POS), an endocrine disorder that can cause infertility or subfertility (among other things). It can often be treated with a combination of diet and an antidiabetic drug called metformin. If this can get the POS under control, ovulation may be restored to normal levels and pregnancy may occur.

It’s my understanding that this is OK (1) because the conception and pregnancy still come about within the boundaries of the marital covenant and (2) because the process doesn’t result in “extra” embryos, as it does in the case of IVF.

God Bless,
Alan

Honestly, the article did not seem to be “out of context.” It correctly stated the Pope’s and the Church’s position on IVF. However, the Church’s position on IVF (and artificial contraception) seems utterly ridiculous to non-Catholics and to many Catholics, too. If the Daily Mail correctly states Catholic teaching and this results in pushing may lukewarm Catholics out of the Church, you should blame the teaching, not the secular press for pointing it out.

Frankly, the press is doing more to advertise Catholic teaching on artificial contraception and IVF than most Catholic priests and bishops. When was the last time you heard a sermon on birth control? I’ve attended Catholic parishes for the past 35 years in Maine, Massachusetts, Oregon, Missouri, and California, and even, for a time, in Guyana, South America – I don’t recall a single sermon on the topic. The only full-length talk I’ve heard on Humanae Vitae was a 45-minute presentation I gave myself last year to a group of Catholic adults.

Pope Paul VI predicted that this teaching would drive adults out of the Church, and he was right – until people just decided that they could ignore the teaching of the Church on sexual matters and make up their minds for themselves.

I agree. I for one am grateful for the internet, because I can access the Vatican’s teaching documents and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, thus educating myself and trying to minimize the damage caused by our priests and bishops’ failure to teach us from the pulpit. There are many of us who want to learn and obey the teachings of the Church, including the unpopular and difficult teachings.
