Pope Francis has denied rumors that he intends to name women as cardinals in the Catholic church, telling a prominent Italian newspaper he was unsure where the idea, which has circulated in recent weeks, had come from.

“I don’t know where any such an idea came from," the pope told the Italian daily La Stampa in an interview published online Saturday. "Women in the Church must be valued not ‘clericalised.’”

Cardinals, sometimes known as the “princes of the church” and for their wearing of red vestments, are the only people who vote to elect the pope. Following a pope’s death or resignation of the papal office, they meet in a secret conclave to cast ballots until a new pope – usually from among their ranks – is chosen.

Cardinals are usually senior Catholic prelates who serve either as archbishops in the world’s largest dioceses or in the Vatican’s central bureaucracy.

Speculation of a woman being named a cardinal by Pope Francis was rampant in November, after NCR reported that a prominent U.S. Jesuit priest had asked his friends and associates to propose names of women around the world who should be considered as possible cardinal candidates.

In his interview with the Italian daily, the pope also responds to criticisms made by conservative radio and television personalities in the U.S. that his recent apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (“The Joy of the Gospel”) was Marxist in its critique of the global economic system.

“Marxist ideology is wrong," the paper quotes the pope as saying. "But I have met many Marxists in my life who are good people, so I don’t feel offended.”

In the apostolic exhortation, Francis said there is an imbalance between the majority of people and a minority whose earnings are “growing exponentially.”

That imbalance, the pope said, “is the result of ideologies which defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation” and gives rise to a “new tyranny” in the world.

How ingrained is the idea that Cardinals must be priests (thus male) or even bishops?

Am I wrong in recalling that there were, in the past, Cardinals who were not ordained?

Hallelujah.
The poor liberal media must be crying their eyes out about this one.

You are correct. While Wikopedia can and does contain errors, it tends to give relatively unbiased views on subjects This is only part of what they have to say about cardinals who are not ordained:

“Lay cardinals”[edit]

Main article: Lay cardinal

At various times, there have been cardinals who had only received first tonsure and minor orders but not yet been ordained as deacons or priests. Though clerics, they were inaccurately called “lay cardinals” and were permitted to marry. Teodolfo Mertel was among the last of the lay cardinals. When he died in 1899 he was the last surviving cardinal who was not at least ordained a priest. With the revision of the Code of Canon Law promulgated in 1917 by Pope Benedict XV, only those who are already priests or bishops may be appointed cardinals.[33] Since the time of Pope John XXIII a priest who is appointed a cardinal must be consecrated a bishop, unless he obtains a dispensation.[34]

Only four positions were established by Jesus - deacon, priest, bishop and pope. All the rest (monsignor, archbishop, cardinal, etc) are manmade and the rules can and do change from time to time. But concerning females being part of the clergy, the Church holds to it’s claim that it does not have that authority.

For reference, this is the whole quote (NCR leaves out the last sentence):

May I ask you if the Church will have women cardinals in the future?

“I don’t know where this idea sprang from. Women in the Church must be valued not “clericalised”. Whoever thinks of women as cardinals suffers a bit from clericalism.”

It is true that at one time there were cardinals who were not ordained to the major orders (deacon, priest, bishop), but all cardinals have always been clerics.

So in the past if Mr. ItalianLaymanDude was made a cardinal by Pope Somebody in 1585, Mr. ItalianLaymanDude would have been tonsured first and probably made a porter or lector or exorcist or something. He would have been a “churchy” person like any priest.

Ah, clarity. I am thankful to the Pope for clearing up these messes of media gossip. I hope he continues to do so and cleans up the multiple other confusions.

addendum: “Churchy” as in a cleric, if you get the “feel” for what that means, because it’s kind of an ambiguous/hard-to-define term.

There have been lay cardinals. Not all cardinals have always been clerics. The clerics have dominated the College of Cardinals. There have been prominent cardinals who were clerics, but not bishops: St. Bonaventure (friar and a priest), Bl. John Henry Newman (a clerk regular) and Avery Dulles, SJ (a clerk regular).

Hallelujah.

No, unfortunately. They believe they have plenty of material with which to write opinion pieces with inflammatory adjectives such as “revolutionary,” and get plenty of people to believe the writers rather than the Church. 😉

The truth, Monika, is that most of the literate world reads uncritically these days (and also unfortunately that group includes too many Catholics). They allow writers without the necessary background and research to do their thinking for them, and are too impatient to fact-check on their own.

Why why Elizabeth banned? Her post was one of the most sane and realistic ones?

People get banned for reasons we do not know. It doubt it had anything to do with her post in this thread.

Remember, don’t question moderator action. They know what they are doing and will only ban a person when it is absolutely necessary.

You are correct. Whatever rationalising etc about tonsures in centuries past need not apply. We are living in a new paradigm. Laypeople, plenty of women among them are on pastoral councils, parish and diocesan alike all over the world. While women can never be ordained one could not rule out the possibility of them having a consultative (name removed by moderator)ut in a conclave. This is a procedural thing not a doctrinal one. Anyway, not saying Francis would go for it, but he didn’t rule it out, just said he didn’t start the rumour:shrug: there’s a lot of mileage left in this pontificate.

That’s for sure!

Francis did outlaw it. Explicitly he said women need to be valued, not clericalized. Previously, on the plane from Rio, he made reference to JP II’s moratorium on female ordination. The role of Cardinal in our modern understanding is implicitly a clerical role. This has been seen through how the office has been limited, first to men, then ordained men, then only for men consecrated as bishops. Francis will not make women cardinals. Period.

I am aware of several historical Cardinals who were laymen prior to entry into the College, but all of the ones that I am aware of were given tonsure. So they would have been in the clerical state as Cardinals.

Are you aware of one who was not tonsured as a cleric upon entry into the College?
