Well, this is a totally different take on the recent visitation to Ireland from the Vatican. The secular media reports I have heard/read stated the vatican took no blame and that nothing was done/being done for the victims, a totally opposite story. But then why I am even surprised?

The verdict: “Inadequate and unable to contain the number of cases of paedophilia”

The island will be struck by a complete change of tactics. New cases will be reported immediately and the Pope will personally intervene to change “the current configuration of the dioceses in order to make diocesan structures better suited to deal with the current mission.” It is time now for all the bishops that covered up the truth regarding paedophile priests (7 have already resigned) to take their leave and the cooperation between dioceses will see a smaller number of better quality priests.

The Vatican inspectors confirmed these faults. The governance of the Irish Church will therefore undergo a deep change. The enquiry on paedophilia carried out by representatives of Benedict XVI means that the Vatican takes the blame for decades of scandals that involved priests, nuns and religious schools. When he was a cardinal and now as pope, Benedict XVI adopted “purification” as his line of action: from now on there will be thorough checks on dioceses and seminaries. After this earthquake, the Irish Church will have a different “configuration” (including ecclesiastical courts) to ensure “adequate and swift resolutions.” Victims will be given the utmost priority and culprits will be handed over to the "civil Authorities and to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.”

A responsible stance by a responsible Pope. God bless him.

Right on! No more “Get Out of Jail Free, Begorra” cards for the clerical paederasts protected by the Irish hierarchy. 👍

Amen…Amen! …and lets remember to continue to pray hard for all the victims…and even harder for the bishops and priest…who perpetrated these sins and crimes against their own entrusted flock.

Pax Christi

Indeed.

Er, what happens to fired bishops? Not like they have any other job skills to fall back on.

Many times they continue to receive a salary. They can continue to say Mass of course. Some move into monasteries. They are taken care of which, despite their failings, makes sense to me.

I’m clueless on Irish Law. In the United States, they would be tried for various felonies, which can include be charged with rape/abuse of a minor*, endangering the welfare of a child(ren), conspiracy, etc. They would likely end up an a sex offender list for the rest of their lives. They wouldn’t need to worry about employment.

The Catholic Church has always been against this crime, but it is nice to see them take a very assertive stance in this matter. People are utterly intolerant against crimes against children, and inaction does an incredible amount of damage against the Church.

*Even if the didn’t actually commit the crime, covering it up is considered participation in the crime and they may be charged for the same crime, but at a lower level. For example, be charged with a Class B felony instead of a Class A.

I may be wrong on this but many, if not most, bishops are given dual citizenship, that of their own country and also of Vatican City. So they won’t necessarily spend the rest of their lives in jail or in exile somewhere.
