Benedict XVI is exhorting Catholic communicators to serve the truth, giving the reasons of the faith and helping to interpret reality from the evangelical point of view.

Isn’t it a sad thing that such a reminder is even necessary? But it is. For years, members of my family have subscribed to the magazine US Catholic. In virtually every issue I ever read I found that they treated the genuine catholic teaching on issues to be just one opinion among many and gave equal (sometimes greater) explanation and even defense of the opposing viewpoint.

With friends like that, who needs enemies?

It’s even worse in Australia. Not only do we have magazines like that (Eureka Street, Catholica Australia) but we even have a “Catholic” electronic news service, CathNews, which does the same, even though it is funded ultimately by the Catholic Bishops of Australia from the contributions which Catholics put on the plate for “the works of the Church”.

We also have a “Catholic” film review office also funded from our collection plates, and staffed by priests, which produces secular reviews of films such as one might read in any secular medium, without any hint of approaching or critiquing any film from a Catholic point of view.
