It does relate, as Our Lady and Our Lord speak of
her Immaculate Heart! But in your understanding, there is no such thing…
I didn’t foresee this implication (private nonbinding revelation vs. a declaration of the infallible magisterium), I was just sort of moved by the statement that Our Lady’s request in 1917 to consecrate the country that would become the torchbearer of communism and atheism is somewhat upsetting to our Orthodox brethren…and why? Because they’ve always venerated Our Lady? So what?
Already in the past the Lord, exactly one hundred years before the French Revolution, asked the King of France through St. Margaret Mary to consecrate France to His Sacred Heart (which he refused to do for a long time). And yet he and France were Catholic. Such a request from above should not be seen as an offense to the Orthodox Church any more than it can be seen an offense to the Catholic Church!
Surely your tradition has a somewhat different understanding of Original Sin, but so is with us in our understanding of these private revelations - sure, nonbiding, and yet officially acknowledged after much prudent discernment (unlike plenty of others) as of supernatural origin and free of theological error. So just as we are upset by that, you may be upset by this - both “upsets” are due to lack of understanding of our tradition, and thus are not justified.
The small difference is that we have supernatural private revelations and miracles to support our beliefs - namely, several officially recognized private revelations from the Lord and Our Lady reaffirming, before and after the dogmatic definition, the Immaculate Conception as we understand it, and the signs of Fatima also known as “miracle of the sun”, witnessed by thousands - and you simply refuse to accept that the Latin Church may be right and the Eastern Church may be wrong on these matters.
We have seen this before.
I know God will take care of everything, give us light to clarify our differences, and reunite us into one flock in due time, if it be His will.
Just I don’t feel it’s right to say Our Lady’s request offends our Eastern brothers. She asked for prayer and for Communion of reparation for many offenses against her, and she asked the successor of Peter to consecrate Russia in particular to her motherly heart. That can’t be offensive.
Christ told the priests and doctors of the law: “
publicans and prostitutes precede you in the kingdom of God”. Now *that *sound offensive. Yet it comes from Christ. We bow our head and bend our knee, period.
I do wish to mention a few facts worth recalling on the Fatima apparitions:
- Russia was experiencing since February 1917 the communist revolution (despite a long history of devotion to Our Lady).
- Three poor children of Portugal (Fatima) begun to see Our Lady in May 1917. They probably didn’t even know what this Russia was, even less what was happening there.
- In 1929 Our Lady asked for the consecration of Russia. It didn’t happen.
- In June 1939 Our Lord said: “they did not want to heed to my request…they will repent and do it, but it will be late. Russia will have already spread its errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecution against the Church: the Holy Father will have much to suffer.”
- In August 1939 the Ribbentrop–Molotov Pact was signed between URSS and Nazi Germany.
- In September 1939 Nazi Germany and the URSS invade Polony. World War II begins.
- On October 1942, Pope Pius XII does a solemn consecration of the world and of Russia in particular to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
- In 1943 we have the “turning point” - the Allies begin to defeat the Axis. World War II ended on September 2, 1945.
- In a 1980 interview on the Third Secret that Our Lady revealed to Sr. Lucia, Pope John Paul II said: “*Because of the seriousness of its contents, in order not to encourage the world wide power of Communism to carry out certain coups, my predecessors in the chair of Peter have diplomatically preferred to withhold its publication. We must be prepared to undergo great trials in the not-too-distant future; trials that will require us to be ready to give up even our lives, and a total gift of self to Christ and for Christ. Through your prayers and mine, it is possible to alleviate this tribulation, but it is no longer possible to avert it, because it is only in this way that the Church can be effectively renewed. How many times, indeed, has the renewal of the Church been effected in blood? This time, again, it will not be otherwise. *”
- On May 13, 1981 - anniversary of the apparitions of Fatima - Pope John Paul II is shot four times at close range by a professional killer and survived. He later said: “It was a mother’s hand that guided the bullet’s path.” One bullet is encrusted on the crown of Our Lady of Fatima. When he later met the shooter, he asked: “So, why aren’t you dead?”
- On March 25, 1984, after having asked all bishops to be united with him in spirit, Pope John Paul II renewed - in St. Peter’s Square, before the statue of Our Lady brought from Fatima - the consecration of the world and of Russia in particular to her Immaculate Heart.
- From 1984 to 1989 major negative events impact the USSR.
- On August 1989 Sr. Lucia writes that now the consecration had been made as Our Lady requested it.
- On November 1989 falls the Berlin Wall.
- On December 25, 1991, the USSR is dissolved.
The Lord said in Scripture: “
if you don’t believe in my words, believe in the works, for wisdom is justified by her works.”
