VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict will unusually host talks with U.S. President George W. Bush in a restored medieval tower on Friday, to repay him for a warm reception at the White House, the Vatican said.

The pope usually receives heads of state in his private study in the Apostolic Palace, overlooking St Peter’s Square.

After their private talks, Bush and the pope will stroll in the gardens to see a statue of the Madonna.

Perhaps President Bush* is** contemplating crossing the Tiber :hmmm: !!! *
His brother is Catholic and Tony Blair made his swim soon after leaving office as Prime Minister of England.
What a News Story that would be 🙂 !!!

Wow! Same thought comes to my mind in regard to the President crossing over:) How wonderfully AWESOME THAT WOULD BE!!👍

This is good news…now I agree with the other posters…would be great if he converted:thumbsup:

I’m not a Republican, but I think history will be a lot kinder to George W. Bush than his present critics are. While his efforts to save innocent unborn lives did not always succeed, he at least tried. Never will I forget realizing that his plan for partial privatization of Social Security could have been lifted right from the Social Encyclicals. I remember my intense embarrassment in watching a Methodist Bush run against a Catholic Kerry and realizing Bush was more Catholic in his convictions than Kerry.
I remember a devastating tornado in a town near here. George Bush went there and met with residents in a Catholic Church. I recall watching him talk for a long time, privately, with the pastor, and wondered what, exactly, they talked about. The pastor is Polish and knew Pope John Paul II. I do know that FEMA restored the church, which was very little damaged, much better than it was before. And right away, too.

Even if Bush never joins the Church, I will always consider him the closest thing to a real Catholic president this country has ever had.

Yes, I agree and I like the way he talks and his manner. He comes across as a normal unsophisticated guy, unlike his oh so haughty opponents.

Watching him and the Pope on the Whitehouse lawn, I was struck by the humbleness of both-two of the most important leaders in the world.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) – When Pope Benedict XVI and U.S. President George W. Bush meet at the Vatican June 13, they will scrap the usual formal protocol and instead hold talks and take a leisurely stroll in the Vatican Gardens.
The Vatican opted for the “particular” and “unusual” setting as a way to show its appreciation for “the cordial welcome and meeting held at the White House” during the pope’s April 15-20 visit to the United States, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, said June 9.
Normally heads of state visiting the pope at the Vatican are taken with much fanfare to the pope’s library in the main Apostolic Palace.

How interesting. My first thought was that maybe they thought Bush wouldn’t be able to handle the formality of the meeting so they did away with the formality. But then I figured they just did this so that the meeting would be more friendly or whatever. 🙂

Bush could be the US first Catholic president as discussed in my original post on Catholic News.

THE POPE AND THE PRESIDENT****
I only hope that Benedict XVI severely scolds the President on his war-making policy, most especially the outrageous invasion of Iraq.

Very kind, Catherine. I agree. Sometimes we can’t see the forest for the trees.

I totally agree Roy. I also hope the Pope does that. President Bush’s war-mongering ways are just disgusting.

I suspected the President may be considering conversion, too. He’s been meeting with the Pope an awful lot. I realize that he was going to be in Italy anyway, but I’ve still wondered… maybe?!

Conversion of President Bush?
Code:
Conversion of President Bush? Three reactions.

(1) Doubt it. He was raised Episcopalian and became a Methodist after he married Laura, who came from a very active Methodist family - and she is a graduate of SMU.

(2) I suspect that Bush's main motive is political, hoping that his visit will assist the GOP ticket among Catholics this November. McCain also was raised Episcopalian, but now attends a Baptist church.

 (3) Frankly, if Bush were to convert, I believe it will hurt the image of Catholicism. Is there any American more despised and distrusted around the world? I doubt it. He followed wild and wicked men around him, mainly neocons, and got us into an stupid war in Iraq, with thousands of Americans and Iraqis dead and wounded, anti-US hatred increased around the world, huge expenditures that could all but bankrupt us, diverting our attention from the real enemies in Afghanistan, over-extending our military, giving more power to the crazies in Iran, feeding immoral profiteers, creating a badly divided Americam people, destroying much Iraqi infrastructure, causing a million ot two Iraqi refugees, giving impetus to a rise of Islamic fundamentalism in Iraq, leading to persecution of Catholics there - and we could go on.

Saddam, as bad as he was (yes, he was bad), was a secularist, despised by bin Laden, an enemy of Iran, and one who permitted Christians to practice their religion freely. His foreign minister, you may recall, was Aziz, a Catholic, who made a pilgrimage to Rome to see the Pope some years back. Women had considerable freedom, did not have to be covered, and there were more women engineers per capita in Iraq than in any other country of the world.
