Pope to make climate action a moral obligation

The Pope is expected to use his first address to the United Nations to deliver a powerful warning over climate change in a move to adopt protection of the environment as a “moral” cause for the Catholic Church and its billion-strong following.
The New York speech is likely to contain an appeal for sustainable development, and it will follow an unprecedented Encyclical (a message to the wider church) on the subject, senior diplomatic sources have told The Independent.

Wow, great news. He is a great man with a broad spectrum of concerns! I love him!
 
I hope he is very careful how he words his statements so that they don’t get hijacked to promote a particular eco-solution … such as the reduction of CO2. I have a great deal of confidence in his prudence but I have to say that having him speak out on this subject gives me some real concern especially in light of the Vatican going to the extreme of buying carbon offsets to achieve the politically correct neutral carbon footprint.

I just hope the Pope doesn’t put too much stock into the man made global warming— I think that whole issue is sort of the same kind of science practiced by witch doctors as to “eclipses” in prior centuries. I do think, however there are many other good and moral reasons to be be good stewards of the earths resources— not the least of which is the imperialism connected w/ the energy barons!
 
This scares me. I hope the pope doesn’t forget to mention to the UN (the majority of whose members are not freely elected governments) that the promotion of abortion and birth control should also be of great concern.

Oh, and by the way, this whole “buying carbon credits” thing is a joke. All it means is that the wealthy can continue to live in their 20,000 sq.ft. mansions, drive their SUV caravans, and jet around the world, without having to feel guilty about it because some poor smuck in guatalajara sells his truck and rides his bike 20 miles to work instead. PLEASE.

Completely agree. The Vatican is being used by the elitist, globalist forces in the UN to circumvent our freedoms.

Yes, that makes sense now. Pope Benedict is a UN shill. He’ll start by making us all buy hybrid cars or ride bicycles. Then he’ll go on to ban such big wastes of energy like air condition. Finally, he’ll work his way up to enforcing a one child per couple policy so that there aren’t as many little polluters out there.

Or maybe His Holiness really sees climate change as a serious threat because the overwhelming majority of credible scientific research supports that conclusion.

I believe that Papa Benedict will restate the moral obligation to care for Gods creations. Earth being one of them. Look a few consumes the majority and many suffer because of this. We are all to live with others needs in mind.

I’m sure his Holiness will remind us that we need to be good stewards of the earth God gave us. I doubt if he gets in the details or endorses any plan.

As far as the overwhelming majority of credit of scientific research supporting the conclusion that’s not true. There is a huge amount of disagreement about the degree of climate change, whether it is man-made, whether it will be good or bad and whether we can do anything about anything about it.

Many like myself are a skeptical because the solutions offered are the same old recycled more government control higher taxes and income redistribution schemes the Left has been pushing for for over a century.

Those who claim this is settled science are trying to kill any discussion to move immediately to imposing their solutions on us whether that makes sense or not.

Dont worry-the goverment will do it for you. the most efficient way is for them to take your enire income and give you back only what they think you deserve.

That’s a relief. On a previous thread, I found out that my state expects me to keep track of purchases made out-of-state, sans sales tax, so I can pay my user tax. It is just too much work Bob.

I think they should take it a step further than just taking all my money and giving me only what I deserve. I’ll just send my bills in, and they can pay them all for me. Of course, I will have to wait for them to decide how much electricity and gas I get to use…and the size of house and car I can own. But, that’s okay! As long as I don’t have to think or do anything, I can be thankful that Daddy Gov is taking care of me. :rolleyes:

I hope you are correct. This is also my assumption, and I would hate to see the Vatican getting to cozy with the pro-abortion, anti-freedom UN. IMO they are an enemy of the Church.

I do my best to conserve, after all I am a conservative. However, a lot of the “environmentalist” (note “mental” is a part of the word :p) plans are really poorly thought out. There are some intelligent conservationists out there, but they don’t get near enough press.

This article does not mention any sources as to how they know that this will be the topic of His Holiness’ speech. The trip is scheduled for Spring of '08. A lot could change between now and then.

Yes, I think we could be called elitists. We shouldn’t be too greedy and call it freedom.
 
OK, so here’s a convert question. Is an encyclical an excercise of the Holy Father’s infallible teaching authority? I mean, hey, politically I’m inclined to disagree with environmentalists (they still give me an uneasy feeling, to be honest; somewhat irrational, but hey, I grew up a neocon). But if an Encyclical is published, and it is from the Pope’s teaching authority, then it’s a moot point whether we’re inclined to agree or not, isn’t it? (I really am posing a question here.) As faithful Catholics, we would have to agree with that document, wouldn’t we?
 
The position of the Pope delivered as part of a UN address would not be considered the Pope speaking authoritatively on a matter of faith and morals, as far as I can determine. Pope’s have opinions on all kinds of issues and sometimes they are just that - opinions. Any part of his address which esentially restates the constant teaching of the Church (ie man as steward and caretaker of his environment) would be part of the teaching authority of the Church.

When the Pope presents a teaching, such as an encyclical, on a matter of faith and morals, it is not necessarily “infallible”. If it is not, we don’t have to agree necessarily but we have to assent. That is, we can’t disobey.
