"…The ADN Kronos news agency has gone so far as to say that the Pope will call a consistory for February 22, the feast of the Chair of St. Peter. Citing “informed Vatican sources,” ADN Kronos said that the consistory will be announced-- and presumably the new cardinals will be identified-- on January 6, the feast of the Epiphany.

The rumors of a consistory have circulated quickly in Rome. Pope Benedict and his immediate staff aides have closely guarded the confidentiality of the Pope’s thoughts and policy decisions. The sudden burst of public speculation could signal that news of the pending consistory has passed beyond the pontifical household.

The timing also seems right for a consistory. The College of Cardinals now has 111 members who are below the age of 80 and thus eligible to vote in a papal conclave; the regulations established by Pope Paul VI in 1975 allow for 120 cardinal-electors.Moreover, there are many leading prelates who appear to qualify for red hats. For example, Archbishops William Levada and Fran Rodé are now prefects of major Vatican congregations-- the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Congregation for Religious, respectively-- whose leaders have always been cardinals…"

From your mouth to God’s ear…I’d love to see Vigeron and Olmsted “move up”…

Although it would be nice, it seems that the US is destined for fewer Cardinals. St. Louis used to have a Cardinal and I believe a few other US cities as well. It seems now that it will just be LA, NY, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Boston…maybe a few others???

Does Detroit still have a Cardinal?

Only if he gets to stay here!

Charles Cardinal Chaput has a nice ring to it though.

Here is a link to the current list of voting cardinals (age under 80):

catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/scardc1.html

There are 3 cardinals who will turn 80 in february/march 2006 reducing the number to 108 - so the Pope can appoint 12 more to bring the number back to 120.

7 more cardinals turn 80 in the rest of 2006 so he may even appoint 19 !!

Yeah! Too bad Vigneron is the Ordinary of a suffragan see, which probably won’t happen.

Adam Cardinal Maida is the Archbishop of Detroit, he will be 76 the early part of 2006.

Always hope. The old Holy Father elevated Avery Cardinal Dulles (too old to vote) and he wasn’t any type of bishop at all. It could happen. I think Cardinal Law may have to pass before Boston gets the red hat again. I DO think it’s time for more than one in the west (LA) and Denver and San Antonio would be great, or even Santa Fe.

what bout africa, the church is growing there. cardinals from there might be nice.

I think you’re right on this one…as much as I would love to see Archbishop Sean Patrick O’Malley elevated…I don’t think it will happen till then either.

I agree with you about Africa.

I think the USA has more cardinals than Mexico, Brazil and The Phillipines combined. The pope may want to do something about that since those countries have more catholics.

In the USA I would like to see a Cardinal Burke.

I think it would be good if the pope went away from the idea of ‘traditional’ cardinals…you know…become the archbishop of chicago, and you get to be a cardinal.

If Levada becomes a cardinal…it seems unlikely that any other americans would be up for the red hat this time doesn’t it?

No, not much hope. I too would like to see it, but that is dreaming, IMHO.

The traditional archdioceses that have cardinals are: Philadelphia, Washington DC, New York, Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, Boston, and Los Angeles. In 5 years, Washington DC and Detroit will be open for appointment. Let’s hope Chaput is promoted to one of those.

History of American Cardinals:

2003:

Justin Francis Rigali-- Archbishop of Philadelphia

2001:

Theodore Edgar McCarrick – Archbishop of Washington DC

Edward Michael Egan – Archbishop of New York

Avery Dulles, SJ-- Theologian

1998:

Francis Eugene George, OMI-- Archbishop of Chicago

James Francis Stafford – Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary

1994:

Adam Joseph Maida-- Archbishop of Detroit

William Henry Keeler-- Archbishop of Baltimore

1991:

Roger Michael Mahony-- Archbishop of Los Angeles

Anthony Joseph Bevilacqua-- Archbishop of Philadelphia

1988:

Edmund Casimir Szoka-- President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State

1985:

Bernard Francis Law --Archbishop of Boston

Denver has had Cardinals in the past. Plus, our Archdiocese is growing. I don’t think this pope is worried too much about the “traditional” Archdiocese in America which have had Cardinals… let’s hope Chaput stays put right where he is after the Pope announces his appointment.

Being a member of his flock in St. Louis, MO, I would be thrilled. Some of the St. Stanislaus folks, however, would probably have different opinions. 🙂

If it is God’s will then let it be done.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen.

I believe that the Archbishop of Saint Louis has often been elevated to cardinal, although that tradition may have been broken under Pope John Paul II.

Oooh oooh YAY, I would really like it if England got another one, of course that is never going to happen, but still it would be really good.

Does anyone think the new Archbishop of San Francisco may be elevated?

The pope doesn’t have to appoint only 12 Cardinals though, JPII went over the limit he established himself didn’t he? - Having said that Pope Benedict doesn’t seem like the type of pope who would do that.
