Pope Francis is raffling off the Homero Ortega brand hat, a new four-wheel-drive Fiat Panda, bicycles, an espresso coffee machine, watches and other objects he has received as gifts in order to raise money for the poor.

My first thought?
Who is selling tickets?
I’m sure this is a raffle local to our dear Pope Francis.
The reasoning and motivation is good.
My second thought?
Raffles are fun… wish I could buy a ticket.
 
I read in another article that tickets can be bought by anyone and are available at Vatican post offices and museums.

It’s a good reminder of what St John Paul II said in regarding the papal tiara whose value Pope Paul donated to the poor.
The last Pope to be crowned was Paul VI in 1963, but after the solemn coronation ceremony he never used the tiara again and left his Successors free to decide in this regard. Pope John Paul I, whose memory is so vivid in our hearts, did not wish to have the tiara; nor does his Successor wish it today. This is not the time to return to a ceremony and an object considered, wrongly, to be a symbol of the temporal power of the Popes. Our time calls us, urges us, obliges us to gaze on the Lord and immerse ourselves in humble and devout meditation on the mystery of the supreme power of Christ himself.

Actions speak louder than words. This raffle is perfectly timed as Black Friday sales begin. Something to consider before buying a useless item because the price is low. Consider the poor who have real needs.
