Pope to Screen New Miniseries on St. Augustine [CNA]

Pope Benedict XVI will attend a special screening of the new television miniseries, “Augustine, The Decline of the Roman Empire,” based on the life of the doctor of the Church and bishop of Hippo, this afternoon in the Swiss Hall at Castel Gandolfo.

According to L’Osservatore Romano, the screening of the miniseries will take place at 5:30pm local time. Christian Duguay, who directed the series, also directed the films “Joan of Arc” and “The Art of War.”

Well, I hope everyone has learned a few things from the failure that is The Passion:

• Don’t cling to someone simply because he makes a Christian movie/book/music/whatever
• Do your research before you applaud the work
• Be just and prudent when judging a work
• Don’t assume that the Pope seeing a work automatically makes it good

I would also like to remind everyone that The Passion is based on a book by Blessed Emmerich which is on the Church’s List of Banned Books (I don’t know the list’s offical name). That list no longer exists, but the books which were on it are still banned from being read. Furthermore, the money which The Passion took in has gone almost exclusiely to Gibson’s so-called “church”, which he has not received permission to build.

Anyone know about plans to air Augustine in the US?

(Eucharisted, I’m with you on The Passion. A thought it was terribly disrespectful and potentially damaging to the spirituality of sensitive folks and of Protestants who don’t usually focus on Jesus’ passion and crucifixion. Personally, I think it was all about money and sensationalism. And I don’t care who thinks I’m judging Mel Gibson.
