The Holy See Press Office has announced that Pope Francis will travel to Lund, Sweden, on October 31 to take part in a joint Lutheran-Catholic ceremony commemorating the 500th anniversary …

No offense to his Holiness, but there is nothing to celebrate in the most catastrophic event in Western civilization, the splintering of Christendom, which resulted in wars killing thousands, which horrors eventually led to the secularization, indifference to belief and moral relativism that poisons our civilization today.

The Head of the Catholic Church would in any case be out of place at this event.

Assuming that the article is accurate, and that Francis is the Head of the Catholic Church, surely someone will inform His Holiness of the problem.

Go and learn what this means: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.”

If someone informed you of the problem with your reaction to this news, would you have ears to hear?

Not sure what my reaction is thought to be, but yes, I have ears to hear. One is slightly damaged, but functional.

Eyes are suitable to the purpose, but are aging, for reading stuff.

Why? I don’t get it…
Neither do I. Reforms could have been made within the Church without all that bloodletting. The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) claimed 8 million lives due to killing, destruction and disease.

This has been in the news for quite sometime. Evidently there are many events being planned and a “common” liturgy to be said.
There are a couple of threads about this already.

Any bets that the statements made that day won’t say anything direct in reference to “return to full faith and Communion with us”? Don’t the state supported Lutheran Swedes now have gay marriage, female bishops, and all kinds of other anomalies that even Luther would consider abhorrent? I’d bet priest Luther would flee back to the Roman Church if he saw what came of most of the ‘reformation’.

The Pope graciously received Sweden’s Lutheran Archbishop Ante Jackelén this past May, and they seemed to get along quite well. Perhaps the plans for the commemoration began then.

will be interesting to see how this plays out.

If the Pope goes to this event, the event becomes something different than planners probably intended.

Though this Pope is on the winning side of the ‘nothing surprises us’ award, I don’t think he’s going to be a viewer only.

He will speak, that will be interesting.

I hope this “celebration” and the recent Finnish Lutheran communion debacle aren’t related.
