I agree with rr1213. Dylan was not performing at a mass, it was a concert for his Holiness. There is no disputing the fact that Bob Dylan was an important cultural icon in his day though referring to him as a prophet may be stretching his impact a bit. Nevertheless, anything that helps raise people’s conciousness to the social malaise, injustice and suffering that exists in this world should hardly be mocked. I suggest you google up his song lyrics if you find his voice too hard to stomach and see for yourself just what he was saying before he stepped back from all the media hype surrounding him. I also suggest some of you re-think Jesus’ teachings regarding passing judgement on others and learn to develop your understanding of Christian charity.

It doesn’t matter so much, except that it is symptomatic of the way in which some things are addressed in these fora.
Ah, but isn’t that what keeps thee and me returning, trying to bring some common sense to the hash that gets stirred and cooked here? You are so right about canonization… Somewhat along the lines of “Don’t confuse me with the facts; I already have my mind made up!”

Here’s to fighting the good fight!

I know what Dylan tries to do is in good but idon’t like his anti vatican stance and i think neither does his Holiness.

What’s his anti-Vatican stance? I thought he was Jewish, except for a couple of years as a “born-again Christian”.

I do wonder about the song “The Groom’s Still Waiting At The Altar”, which I think comes from the born-again period, and depending on how I hear it I wonder if it’s referring to Christ & the Church.

The only song he actually sings that I like is one he does with the Traveling Wilburys called “The Monkey Man,” just because it’s kind of weird. It’s a good job that he can write, because he would have gotten nowhere on his voice.

why is this under a news forum? I realize the link is to a newspaper article, but it refers to an event several years ago, before Benedict became pope. It is NOT news.

The pope probably realizes that guitars are not that big a deal (as I said, I don’t care for them at Mass, but that’s a personal aesthetic
i think it’s more than just a personal aesthetic. guitars do not fit with the roman rite, the organ has the pride of place–the guitar is a novelty. in some eastern rites, musical instruments are not used, only singing is allowed.

in my opinion, we should return to the tridentine mass. fat chance of that though.
