Sexual violence in Vatican city couldn’t be “punished by up to 12 years in prison” before this???

It means we have a really great Pope. The Vatican is like a separate country. They have their own laws. In the past they may have tried to handle things spiritually, but miscreants always take advantage of that. Now they will have hard-line criminal laws to act as a deterrent. Is it unChristian to think that someone caught in the act of molesting a child should be killed on the spot?

I think it’s good what the pope is doing. This should have been done years ago. 👍

Vatican City has simply updated its criminal code ( which, from what I have read, comes from the Italian criminal code from many years ago) to include things that have only recently become necessary, such as stealing Vatican paperwork. The addition of the sex abuse statute comes from what we have seen in the world over the past decade or so.

It seems like this should have been the law for the at least the past 1000 years. Sexual and child abuse are not new phenomena.

Pope Francis overhauled the laws that govern the Vatican city-state on Thursday, criminalizing leaks of Vatican information and specifically listing sexual violence, prostitution, and possession of child pornography as crimes against children that can be punished by up to 12 years in prison.
Vatican city has a prison? I guess I never thought about it before.

I agree with your statement, handling things spiritually does not always work. Sometimes you must, “bring the hammer down”.

We have a good Pope. He looks at things in a realistic fashion. These guys are Priests that he is dealing with. Do right because you want to, or do right because I will kick you in your rear parts, but do right. I respect that. However, we must legitimately follow the law.

It is un-Christ centered to kill a person on the spot that is caught in the act of abusing a child. Imagine, they can be given a fair trial and immediately turned loose into the prison general population. However, the cops can be called, …and the guy can slip down the stairwell of the one story building… a few times. We no longer hang people upside down by a rope around their ankles, or roast marshmallows and sausages at their feet… but I can wish in my heart. Is it wrong to feel the way I do? Yes, it is. But I can go to confession, the poor child needs counseling, proper love of a parent, direction and the knowledge that (s)he is innocent and of immense value.

We have child Molesters across the street from us and keep getting in and out of prison for the same thing. Sometimes I wish jail time would stick. I warn kids to stay away from their place. All I can do.
