VATICAN CITY: Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday urged Roman Catholics to “do penance” as the Church comes under assault over widespread paedophile priest scandals.

“Now under the attacks of the world which talk to us about our sins, let us see that we can do penance,” the Pope said at a mass at the Vatican…

I think the guilty should do penace, but calling all of us to do penance because the world is ‘talking to us about our sins’ seems odd. For starters, why shouldn’t the world talk to us about our sins? And for the record, these sins—molesting children and covering it up—don’t belong to all or even most of us.
You can relax. He wasn’t speaking to you. He made his comments at a Mass for members of the Pontifical Biblical Commission (a committee of cardinals). There are those who will follow the example of Christ and willingly offer sacrifices for the sins of others.

Um, we cannot imitate Him in atoning for the sins of others. He died for us; we cannot die for each other. One way, however, we might imitate Jesus is by ‘turning over the tables in the Temple,’ that is, raising holy hell with those who have stained the Father’s house with egregious sins…
Oh come on…no one is suggesting that any of us have to die for another. Penance can simply mean praying for others. The Pope just can’t do anything right for some these days…even if it means teaching on Catholic theology.

It seems like anything the pope says lately, people will use against him, even Catholics.
i dont think this is the time to begin point finger who is guilt and who is not. we are all guilt of sins. no of us can stand up and say we have not sin. no of us.

we all must do penance for the Church. we must. and pray that the bishops and priests come forward and also admit they are also sinners and guilt of it too.

i remember a homily one time at my parish and Scriptures were about God punishing the shepards of Isarel for misleading the people into the wrong path. well, the priest turned the whole thing around as if the people were the sheperds that God was talking to. i was very upset that he could not recognize that God was talking to them and not to the people. our sheperds have lost the sense of leadership, they no longer know who they are. that is why we are in a mess.

Praying and doing penance for the sins of self and others is in fact part of the Fatima message. Bolding is mine, a link for your reference is at the bottom of the post.

FATIMA PRAYERS
TAUGHT BY THE ANGEL AT FATIMA (1916) :angel1:

My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You! ** I beg pardon for those who do not believe, nor adore, nor hope, nor love You.**

Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly. I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifference by which He is offended. And, through the infinite merits of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of sinners.

TAUGHT BY OUR LADY AT FATIMA (1917)

"Sacrifice yourselves for sinners and say often,
especially whenever you make a sacrifice:

O Jesus, this is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary." (July 13, 1917)
