Pope warns against dangers of 'adolescent progressivism'

In his daily homily Pope Francis cautioned against modern society’s push for a unified secular ideology, saying that this does not create positive globalization but rather an “adolescent progressivism.”

“The spirit of worldliness also exists today, today also brings us this desire to be progressive, following a single thought,” the Pope said during his Nov. 18 daily Mass.

“This is precisely the fruit of the devil, of the prince of this world, which leads us forward in a spirit of worldliness. And after, the consequences occur,” he added, highlighting how not only did the people of God take the “customs of the pagans,” they took it “a step further.”
Yes, absolutely, we don’t just want to go with the feel-good philosophy of the world…

When I read that phrase “adolescent progressivism” I felt a twinge of guilt and thought, “I stand accused. The pope’s been reading some of my posts on CAF!” :o
 
“Wanting to be like everyone else” even though free will, freedom and rights are always used as justification by progressives in their beliefs and ideas.

I see the contradiction. Progressive thinking empowers you into believing you’re more free, that the trends of today are more relevant and therefore superior than things from the past. That certainly applies to spirituality and the immaterial essence that is Faith, yet we fall for the materialism so closely wound into progressivism and it’s promises.

Hence the danger. You become like everyone else, but you’ve compromised something between you and your faith in God. If you don’t stop yourself and deeply reflect on it, your master has already become the world, your ideology has superseded your faith. And it was only this faith that bounded you to God. With anti-religion songs like “Wake me up when it’s all over” getting over 100 milion views on youtube, the propaganda is working on people who refuse to open their minds to even consider it. They’re such good soldiers, intolerant of alternative views like ours.

I can’t tell if you’re serious or not, but the first thought that comes to my mind is that Francis is referencing the sins of the ancient Israelites.

I agree it’s not a positive message, but is it explicitly anti-religious ? (It wouldn’t surprise me either way)
 
I too am curious about the anti-religion aspect of that song. I didn’t catch it either.

I haven’t received that phone call from the Holy Father yet, but reading the many enthusiastic refutations to progressivism here is certainly the next best thing. 🙂

Seeing as how my progressive views were formed back in the 1970’s, thanks in no small part to those well-meaning, visionary, recently habit-less Sisters who taught me back in Catholic school, I would say my progressivism is still quite adolescent. 🙂
 
From what I gather, the Pope seems to be decrying politically correct behaviour and the trend toward basing your morality on the prevailing views of the majority of the ‘in’ crowd. Diversity of thought, rather than curbing your expressions to conform with the current trends, is not the kind of behaviour that is rewarded, for sure.

It is very easy to get caught into the trap of thinking that the current trend is inevitable, and that history will judge anyone who goes against the trend as archaic, or some kind of obsolete dinosaur. History however, seldom turns out how the movers and the shakers of the world plan it out to be. The future is only a straight line from the past in retrospect, as everything that has led us up to the point that we are in is remembered, and everything else is forgotten.
People would not think of themselves as progressive so much if they could see where their line of thinking is progressing to. Group think inevitably will lead to epic failure. The more people jump onto the bandwagon, the more the whole society will end up in the same failed state.

Allowing for diversity of thought, rather than uniformity of thought imposed by political correct censures, is a preventative against the epic failure. But more importantly, instilling the values of the wisdom of the ages will give people an alternative to being swept away by the trends of history.

1984 is a great book. It seems to be becoming more and more prophetic as time goes on. Though I would say I think we’re headed more towards A Brave New World than 1984.
