Pope: We must fight against evil

During a lunch with members of the College of Cardinals on Monday to mark the 7th anniversary of his pontificate, Pope Benedict thanked his closest advisors for all their support during both the joys and the difficulties of his Petrine ministry.

The Pope began by thanking God for the joyous days as well as what he called ‘the dark nights’ and went on to reflect about the presence of evil in the world. We can see, he said, how evil seeks to dominate our world, through cruelty and violence, but also in more subtle ways, posing as a force for good while destroying the moral foundations of society. Recalling the old fashioned use of the term ‘the Church militant’, the Pope said we must fight against evil and for this reason it is important to have friends to support us in this struggle. Recalling also the words of Our Lord, ‘Take heart, I have overcome the world’, Pope Benedict said we are on the Lord’s team and therefore we will be victorious.

He is painting us a picture of the REAL WORLD. The world as it is in 2012. Profoundly EVIL. Evil that is both in your face and insidious and sneaky. Quite sobering. But…at the same time it is a picture of HOPE. We indeed are on the side of Christ and His Church…WE WIN!!!

Your assessment is too negative. The Pope did not say that the world is profoundly evil. He said that there is evil in the world that must be fought against. There is much good in the world, too.

He is defending the church in exactly what the Pope is saying to us…I do not agree with all this man says, but he was there and got a similar message

I agree! I tire of hearing from so many conservative Catholics on sites like facebook that go on and on about how profoundly evil the world is and how this and that is satanic. They seem caught up in such despair. We are a part of God’s creation, and we need to look around at all the good in it as well as be good stewards and try to right the evils.

I agree with all that there is much evil in the world today, but also much good. I have a couple of brothers that recently have become quite ‘obsessed’ with researching evil in the world (which has many conspiracy theories), such as the illuminati, free masons, etc. I admit, that much of the stuff they have stumbled upon and symbolism is quite scary, but I wish they would focus their attention more on finding God rather than finding the devil, because let’s face it, it is not very hard to find evil (just turn on the TV).

Has anyone had experience with family members that have had this issue, or any advice? It has definitely caused may family many aches, as they have now moved to the SSPX, as I think some of their ‘research’ has come up with issues with the pope and Vatican II.

Any help or guidance is appreciated (as well as prayers!!!)

The notion that the material world was profoundly evil was actually one of the Gnostic heresies. As Catholics we are called to marvel at the goodness of God’s Creation and to prevent evil from corrupting it through sin.

Yes I totally agree with the Holy Father in what He said. I am fighting satan and demons, by destroying shrines used by ‘catholic’. They should be truely Catholic in whole. I also worked with a Charismatic group to help these ‘catholics’ to leave this evil life of practising magic destroying items they used in their evil practise. Thank God, so many people stop their evil practice and repent. Gilbert Islands is one the pacific nations who still practice such practice.
Yes believing in the Lord Jesus Christ who is the conqueror of evil will help us all to fight against evil.
Have faith in Jesus Christ and also our Blessed Mother Mary and the angels, St Michael, St Raphael and St Gabriel and all the angels and saints to fight against satan, demons and all their cunning and smart ways.

Let’s be the salt of the earth and speak the truth daily. We are the counter-culture to the “mainstream” culture which is subtle in many unGodly ways.

If we help even one person, that is a good thing. Some, I think, feel that if Catholics cannot do something on a large scale quickly, that we are somehow “losing.” The truth is, silence is not helping in the fight, and doing nothing is not helping in the fight.

Just posting the truth here is speaking up and is doing something.

Indeed, the Pope is correct to say that we must fight evil.

People need to be aware that evil exists in this world and it is real.
Outward manifestations of evil are all around us - murder, violence, theft.

However there are other issues that prove the existence of evil.
Complacency being one.
Many are complacent. They assume that because there is no outward manifestation of evil that everything must be fine. This complacency slowly rots what peace that may exist.
 
Our faith in Jesus Christ the conqueror of evil and the help of our Mother Mary, the Queen of all the Angels is my shield and victory. It is God’s work in our strong faith in Him.
St Patrick is right in what he said quoting from St Francis of Assisi.

I have little to advice, as I have the same problem. A brother, a very committed catholic when younger, has been following these conspiracy theories for years and needless to say the Catholic Church is top of their list, unfortunately not helped by the child abuse sex scandals over the past decade.

I have read most of what he follows, so as to keep up with him and have been able to argue my corner, very successfully, regarding any issue connected to the CC. All I do is pray continually for him and hope that a seed, I throw out to him, will stick one day and grow turn him back again (I am sure this will be the case, eventually). It has been going on for years now.

If, you have the time, I would make yourself aware of their ‘theories’ and be ready to counterattack any inference on the church. Fortunately, I have been able to do this in the past (usually by coming onto CAF and asking for answers and advice! :D), and won all ‘arguments’, hands-down.

Let me tell you my own story of the pass, of the turning point to what I am now a defender of the Catholic Church.
I had no idea about evil in my family when I was young. There are 12 of us in the family. My parents have their own stories of the past; cultural heritage like freeman, kingship, warrior, traditional dancers, navigators and fisherman. I collected these stories from my close family member s (cousins, uncles and unties) as my parents never talk about these. My mom would say when I asked about these when I was a teenager “it is forbidden for you to know”. I asked her many times but she answered the same.
My collections started when I was in Secondary School, in my formation years in the seminary when I came home and now as I am a priest. My mother is a convert and she is a devoted Catholic and she is in her 80’s. I helped her from her past last year with the Charismatic group. I love my mother dearly and my dad passed away when I was 9 or 10 can’t remember my age that time but remember all what happened.
This cultural heritage connected with evil. How? I don’t know. I just listened to their stories and learning dancing and navigation from my father, uncles and cousins. They never told me anything about evil and the how, to be honest. My parents are very loving, generous and caring.
Things becomes clear when I became a priest in 2008 up to 2010 the turning point my life. I struggled in my 1st and 2nd years of ministry especially when I drink alcohol. I prayed a lot until 2010 Jesus himself saved me when I gave my burden to him to help me in my morning Eucharistic Sacrifice. This happened sometimes early in January 2010. He did save me and in turn He game a new mission, to fight evil (satan and all demons), to defend the Church and the faith, to save people from evil and bring them back to Jesus Christ. That is what I did in 2010 up until this present moment.
We (with the Charismatic group) went around to every Catholic houses on the island to pray to cast devils from homes and lay hands on sick people; most cases are possessions. Thank God it is God’s work, in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. So many people give up their evil life by giving evil items they used for evil purposes of which we destroyed them. I destroyed shrines used for evil purpose. This happened in my first parish called Nonouti island (the island of Betero Terawati and Tiroi Rataro indigenous to bring the faith to the country in 1881 before the arrival of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1888). So It is good to see them returning to Jesus Christ, life renewed in Jesus Christ. This is not easy. I have to say so many prayers, meditations, penances, fasting together with giving alms to those in need.
I destroyed shrines also in my home island in May this year and helped my family members and relatives and people to bring them back to Jesus Christ. These things need to be destroyed in all the islands together with items which are connected with evil. This is what I did in the islands I have visited. This is what and who I am now.
There is a lot more to say but if you have questions I would be happy to share more.
