I don’t understand why people keep calling the pope the anti christ I think this is personally crazy. Besides, I don’t think God would allow the devil to infiltrate this holy man.

Also, I have heard that people started doing this sort of thing after the protestant reformation. I guess maybe they do this as a way to attack the catholic Church because the catholic church taught things at that time that not all protestants agreed with.

The best thing that I think Catholics should do is pray for the pope and those people that are casting these names at him so they can find the truth, and to stop believing all the lies and falsehoods that are being sometimes bred by these different sects. To then come to the Church of truth, that is led by the Holy Spirit.

I personally think that the catholic church because of the sacrament of reconcilliation is the only true way into eternal bliss with God. This is because as a church we have something that no other church has and that is the forgiveness of sins by God through a priest.

We need to keep praying for the pope these are difficult times and the more extreme fundamentalist type christians attack him sometimes because they don’t believe in his authority passed to him from Jesus to guide the church, so it is safer psychologically to discredit him with terrible lies. I think it is boils down to pride as do many people who cast lies. Other times they have mental issues. There are probably many more reasons, but i think the majority of christians are more level headed, and not saying this thankfully.

Sadly, these days, such allegations are made equally by Catholics and Protestants. I’m not providing any links, because they will destroy your faith in human decency and charity, but some of our own fold write stuff that makes Jack Chick sound like Garrigou-Lagrange. :(

Oh dear, I don’t know what the stats are but everyone in my parish seems to pray for the pope regularly we love the pope as our leader he is a good man. I know he may say stuff that is off the cuff sometimes but who am i to judge haha, he always says it with a good heart and good intention. He is a peaceful good and holy man of god and needs all our support. It’s not surprising there is a spiritual battle going on, there always has been but it may get worse it says so in the bible, perhaps this is the time spoken about, i don’t know no one knows when Jesus will return, but we know it will get worse than ever before he does. I believe like the OP the jesus will protect that man with the keys, and certainly st francis is a good pope.

God bless you and your parish, then. 👍

Pope’s ecclesial integrity pre-supposes you understand true and divine infallible Catholicism.

Protestants have been claiming the Pope to be the anti-Christ since Luther. But even Luther at first still submitted to the papacy. You can see that in his preface to “On the Liberty of a Christian.” (1520) In this work he developed his doctrine of Sola Fide. He dedicated it to Pope Leo X. But then over time he got more radicalized and so did the other reformers. He started calling the Pope the anti-Christ in his later article’s and confessions closer to the end of his life. Today, most Protestants don’t go as far as the early reformers did and most seem to like the Pope. But there are still Fundamentalist out there who still like to claim the Pope as anti-Christ.

Actually the confessional Lutherans such as the LCMS and Wels still to profess the Pope is the antichrist. Today it’s interpreted as he sits in the “seat of the AntiChrist.”

Smalcald Articles, Article four (1537)

…the Pope is the very Antichrist, who has exalted himself above, and opposed himself against Christ because he will not permit Christians to be saved without his power, which, nevertheless, is nothing, and is neither ordained nor commanded by God. This is, properly speaking to exalt himself above all that is called God as Paul says, 2 TheTss. 2, 4.

Today’s interpretation from some longtime LCMS posters it that the Pope himself is NOT the antichrist but sits in the “seat of the antichrist” for the above reasons. So the thought is alive and well among the confessional Lutherans.

The posters here that are confessional Lutherans are wonderful posters and very Christ centered just for the record. This is not to denigrate the Lutheran people in any way.

Mary.

Oh wow, I didn’t know that. Well, at least they don’t go out in the middle of street screaming at people telling them the Pope is going to hell or something. Those are the Fundamentalist and what most people think of when they hear about someone claiming the Pope is the Anti-Christ.

Also, isn’t Lutheran Satire LCMS? He has made a few videos making fun of Pope Francis:

But I’ve never heard him say the Pope is in the chair of the Anti-Christ or anything.

The Lutheran Satire website notes Hans is a Pastor in a church in Illinois that via the web states it is indeed a LCMS Church. (If that info is still current.)

It’s too bad time is spent making fun of Pope Francis. I think spreading the gospel message can be done without such things.

Well it should be 100% at the parish, since the pope is necessarily commemorated in the canon/diptychs of a Catholic mass.

Why care what people say? They called Jesus possessed and/or from the devil, and He assured us that we would also be hated because of Him.

Catholicism is based on the reach agreement that Christ has win for us the divine salvation of our souls.

It has its roots in Luther calling the pope the anti-christ, and is part of the Lutheran confessions:

Of the Antichrist
As to the Antichrist we teach that the prophecies of the Holy Scriptures concerning the Antichrist, 2 Thess. 2:3-12; 1 John 2:18, have been fulfilled in the Pope of Rome and his dominion. All the features of the Antichrist as drawn in these prophecies, including the most abominable and horrible ones, for example, that the Antichrist “as God sitteth in the temple of God,” 2 Thess. 2:4; that he anathematizes the very heart of the Gospel of Christ, that is, the doctrine of the forgiveness of sins by grace alone, for Christ’s sake alone, through faith alone, without any merit or worthiness in man (Rom. 3:20-28; Gal. 2:16); that he recognizes only those as members of the Christian Church who bow to his authority; and that, like a deluge, he had inundated the whole Church with his antichristian doctrines till God revealed him through the Reformation — these very features are the outstanding characteristics of the Papacy. (Cf. Smalcald Articles, Triglot, p. 515, Paragraphs 39-41; p. 401, Paragraph 45; M. pp. 336, 258.) Hence we subscribe to the statement of our Confessions that the Pope is “the very Antichrist.” (Smalcald Articles, Triglot, p. 475, Paragraph 10; M., p. 308.)

Yes…the Lutherans do have a sort of Jekyll and Hyde position…I think this allows them to rationalize their position…say they love the pope, do not hate him, and then confess and affirm their confessional document that the pope is the Anti-christ.

It’s probably just intentionally provocative language.

Read Matthew 25. Many of those among the righteous who will go into heaven will express surprise and ignorance at the idea that their good works to the poor were done toward Jesus. Such people obviously would not be Christians who already know that helping the poor is to “help” Jesus. It would appear that the reason people who go to heaven in include non-Christians is because salvation is less about theological doctrine and more about a right heart.

I cannot find any support in the NT for the notion of human priests whose spiritual duty is to hear confession and forgive sin any more than what the average Christian is already compelled to do. Where does the NT teach that God will not hear your prayer for forgiveness, nor actually forgive, unless you seek him through another person acting as priest? Can you not approach God on your own?

On the other hand, I find the protestant interpretation of Peter’s binding and loosing in Matthew 16 a definite Achille’s heel. Protestant know exactly nothing of binding and loosing, or of the possibility of “retaining sins”, yet it is completely biblical.

Papal spirit is based on the fact that his allegiances is permanently moral.

OH Dear that’s a shocking thing to say about our pope, to have that said about you yet still meet them shows great charity on the pope’s part.

I might be wrong*… but I think that the Office of the pope is “anti-Christ”, that the man in the position may be a nice enough fellow but is in an unholy job. They love the sinner (Jorge Bergoglio) but hate the sin (Pope). JonNC could probably give you a far better answer.

*No, seriously. It could happen. 🤷
