Hi folks.

I couldn’t help but noticing something here.

Yesterday on CWN (Catholic World News), this headline ran:
“Pope calls for conscientious objection by pharmacists”
Full story here

Today, there is a follow up article about Italy being upset for these remarks.

I couldn’t help but notice that the Holy Father never spoke of artificial birth control as a whole, only about those drugs that cause the fertilized egg not to implant.

Makes you think doesn’t it??

I’m not posting here to entice argument, but I would like to know what y’all think about it.

Thanks!

He is probably aware of the effectiveness of “the pill” as a prescription for certain diseases. However, the “morning after pill” seems to me to have only one purpose. Someone please correct me if I am wrong about that (as if I have to ask for correction out here 🙂 )

The Holy Father, in his statements, was commenting on a particular policy initiative, – the dispensing of abortion pills – so in addition to the differences in the nature of the medications, it is probable that he was maintaining focus on the issue at hand.

It can be counterproductive, sometimes, to respond too broadly to a particular situation, and perhaps the Holy Father was concerned about that possibility.

It should be noted, too, that the use of birth control per se does not, according to the canons of the church, bring with it the penalty of excommunication. But murder and abortion do. Preventing conception is sinful; causing a conceived human to die is murder.

Blessings,

Gerry
