Pope’s concern for immigrants in ‘La Repubblica’ interview
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis says his main concern, at this moment of political upheaval in the United States, is for the suffering of refugees and immigrants. In an interview with the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica, the Pope says he doesn’t judge individual politicians, but he wants to see how their policies may affect the poor and most marginalized people.
In the interview, Pope Francis notes that, alongside the refugees fleeing from poverty and conflicts, there are also many poor people suffering in rich countries too and they fear the arrival of these new immigrants. We must stop this vicious cycle, the Pope says, by breaking down the walls of inequality and building bridges to allow greater liberty and human rights for all. Inequality, he insists, is the greatest evil in the world today.
Speaking on Monday, ahead of Donald Trump’s surprise victory in the U.S. presidential elections, Pope Francis talks of his admiration for civil rights leader Martin Luther King, saying that love alone is capable of breaking the cycle of hatred and evil. Christians in the world today, he notes, number some two and a half billion people who must share their faith by following the example of Christ himself.
The Pope also mentions the many Christian martyrs who have died at the hands of so-called Islamic State terrorists, saying that wars of religion only occur when people put political power in the place of faith and mercy.
Finally, when questioned about opponents within the Catholic Church, the Pope replies that faith unites all, while individuals may see things from a variety of different perspectives. **

My main construction is the potential moral, social, and structural degeneration of this country, which would give rise to incredible suffering worldwide should it eventually result in the collapse in this great country.

And thankfully, we’ve dodged a bullet, at least for the next four years. Hillary would have done incalculably more damage to America than Trump could conceive of doing.

Makes sense. These are the basics of our faith. Concern for the poor, the widow, the orphan. I agree with Pope Francis’s disagreement with Trumps planned action against immagrants and even the horrific deporting of current citizens who happen to be of a different faith or from a different country. How awful! 😦

Hi

Crux also reported on this.

I am really trying to understand his comments about Communism / Marxism. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

According to the journalist, this must mean the pope wants a society dominated by equality, the program of Marxist socialism and communism. “Do you think of a Marxist-like society?” Scalfari asked.

“If anything, it’s the Communist who think like Christians,” Francis replied. “Christ spoke of a society where the poor, the weak, the marginalized, have the right to decide. Not the demagogues, not Barabbas, but the people, the poor, who have faith in a transcendent God, or not. It is they who must help to achieve equality and freedom.”

Based on this, I think Pope Francis will be very happy with the impact Donald Trump’s policies have on America.

One of the things I appreciate most about Pope Francis is that he doesn’t view the entire world as revolving around the United States. Because of that, he might not know that our immigration system is specifically designed to depress the wages of working class Americans and provide an endless supply of cheap labor to ultra-wealthy capitalists. It fuels income inequality and harms working class families, it is especially harmful to recent immigrants.

Also, we are committed to doing the most good for refugees. We know that we can secure 12 refugees in safe-zones in their own region for the price of bringing 1 to America, and Donald Trump has pledged to focus on that, where we can do the most good.

Can you give a citation for this claim that Trump has proposed to deport citizens?

You cannot deport a citizen. Trump has never indicated he would deport any citizen for any reason.
