Pope's Mass

Does anyone know how I can obtain a special Mass said by the Pope for my mother-in-law? She will be 95 years old soon and I’d like to see if this is possible…thanks…

To purchase a Mass card at ordinary parishes, there are usually very long waiting lists as people sometimes buy Mass cards years in advance to commemorate the anniversary of someone’s death or another special event. I can only imagine the wait at the Roman Basilicas (if they say memorial Masses) and then there’s the issue of knowing in advance which Masses the holy father will be presiding and how you would go about obtaining that.

Have you considered purchasing a Mass card from the cathedral in your local diocese or another notable church like St. Peter’s cathedral in New York?

I believe that you might be able to write to the Apostolic Delegate (formerlly known as the Papal Nuncio) to see if you can get a special commemorative certificate from the Holy Father celebrating the occasion.

You usually can get a papal blessing through your parish. They need about six weeks since the blessings are hand lettered by nuns at the Vatican. We process them all the time. I got one for my parents 50th. They are different prices depending on the size and the design.

I think you can order some Masses that the Pope has presided over, like last Sunday’s “Baptism of the Lord” from EWTN, as it was broadcast on EWTN among other stations. www.ewtn.com

Benedictgal, my old college chum, I think you are mistaken. I have searched the internet and I haven’t found anything that says that the Nunciature in Washington was downgraded to an Apostolic Delegation.

Apostolic Delegations exist where the Holy See doesn’t have formal diplomatic relations with a country. In fact, there is an article today on the Catholic News Service website about the silver anniversary of the U.S.-Holy See opening formal diplomatic relations.

When I was initially trying to get infomration for my dad, I called directory assistance for the Papal Nuncio in D.C. The listing that I was given was for the Apostolic Delegate. In fact, that is what it is now called according to the Vatican Information Service.

FWIW, I believe that when it was originally established in DC, it was called an Apostolic Delegation (headed by an Apostolic Delegate) since (a) there were no formal diplomatic ties between the US and Vatican City and (b) as a concession to American sensibilities. If I’m not mistaken, elsewhere in the world the Vatican Embassy is still called a Nunciature (headed by a Papal Nuncio).
