Does anyone know how I can obtain a special Mass said by the Pope for my mother-in-law? She will be 95 years old soon and I’d like to see if this is possible…thanks…
Benedictgal, my old college chum, I think you are mistaken. I have searched the internet and I haven’t found anything that says that the Nunciature in Washington was downgraded to an Apostolic Delegation.I believe that you might be able to write to the Apostolic Delegate (formerlly known as the Papal Nuncio) to see if you can get a special commemorative certificate from the Holy Father celebrating the occasion.
When I was initially trying to get infomration for my dad, I called directory assistance for the Papal Nuncio in D.C. The listing that I was given was for the Apostolic Delegate. In fact, that is what it is now called according to the Vatican Information Service.Benedictgal, my old college chum, I think you are mistaken. Apostolic Delegations exist where the Holy See doesn’t have formal diplomatic relations with a country. In fact, there is an article today on the Catholic News Service website about the silver anniversary of the U.S.-Holy See opening formal diplomatic relations.
FWIW, I believe that when it was originally established in DC, it was called an Apostolic Delegation (headed by an Apostolic Delegate) since (a) there were no formal diplomatic ties between the US and Vatican City and (b) as a concession to American sensibilities. If I’m not mistaken, elsewhere in the world the Vatican Embassy is still called a Nunciature (headed by a Papal Nuncio). When I was initially trying to get infomration for my dad, I called directory assistance for the Papal Nuncio in D.C.
