The Pope’s offer to Anglicans to convert to Catholicism risked inciting discrimination and even violence towards Catholics in Britain, according to leaked US diplomatic cables. The confidential reports claimed that the British ambassador to the Vatican believed relations with the Holy See as being at “their worst crisis in 150 years”.

It followed Pope Benedict XVI’s special dispensation to disaffected Anglicans who are against the ordination of women priests to turn to the Catholic faith. He said they could convert in groups while retaining their own leadership and some of their rites in a body called an Ordinariate.

I would be deeply saddened if any violence were to occur. However, would not the violence be from the Anglicans or others directed at the Catholics and not the other way around? Regardless, I definitely would not want to see violence.

I guess that I thought the article was basically saying that some of the more anti-Catholic Anglicans and others in the United Kingdom were angry with the Pope for making this offer. If that is the case, then that is sad. However, I still support what the Pope chose to do and I will continue to support him. He is trying to end a long-standing schism, is that not a good thing?
 
Nah…no risk of violence = which is a good thing. 😃

People are far too apathetic about religion for that here in England - a bad thing :mad:

After talking to my Priest about this, I am concerned about the Priests in Britain.

My Priest said he’s been spat on and wherever he goes, people will shout at him. My Mum is friends with a Priest from London and he gets it even worse. He has to hide his collar when he’s in public.

My sister wants to become a Muslim and now wears a hijab. She likes wearing it because now she gets so much respect when she goes out :confused:

I haven’t seen or experienced any violence. In fact, I’ve found it the other way around since the Holy Father’s visit in September. He woke a spark in some people and I have been asked more about my faith since his visit than I ever was before.

And I am with you in supporting the efforts to end the schism. The fact that the numbers steadily moving over have been consistently reported by the mainstream press indicates that the Holy Father intervened at just the right moment.

I am very sorry to hear what your priest has experienced.

I live in London and thankfully my priest, who is very active and visible in our parish, has not had the same experience. I could never imagine him hiding his collar.

This is not a schism. Schism implies doctrinal acceptance of the Church, while not in communion with it. Anglicanism came about in the Reformation Period of about 500 years ago. Their liturgy was never valid and their orders were invalidated, later confirmed by Pope Leo XIII.

That said, I can understand the hardening feelings between Anglicans and Catholics in England. Though Catholicism is tolerated in England, (I know, I lived there) the monarchy (and its ministers) want to preserve their independence from the Vatican. They see this mass conversion as a threat to their faith.

I’d worry more about the Orangemen in the Six Counties.

As hard as I try, I just can’t imagine Canadian Anglicans rioting.

On the other hand don’t Brits still do the Guy Fawkes day stuff? Seems like a bit 'o baggage may remain…

Good to hear it is dying out. I’ve never been, so my impressions are second hand from a friend’s mom whose family came over here shortly after the Blitz. I suppose a FEW things might have changed since then…

Well, there was the October crises, also in Quebec I might add.

We once had a riot here in Halifax. a few years ago - I can’t remember if it was about race, or hockey.😊 We did have North America’s first race riot in NS back in the 18th century. And some minor G7 riots.

But none of these were Anglican riots.

These guys weren’t the sporty type. It was a Quebec-only holiday (St. Jean Baptiste Day?) and by the looks of it they had come to the city for the purpose of making trouble.
