Pope's peace doves get attacked

Very bizarre, both doves were attacked by two birds from different species. :eek:

Two white doves that were released by children standing alongside Pope Francis as a peace gesture have been attacked by other birds. As tens of thousands of people watched in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, a seagull and a large black crow swept down on the doves right after they were set free from an open window of the Apostolic Palace. One dove lost some feathers as it broke free from the gull. But the crow pecked repeatedly at the other dove. It was not clear what happened to the doves as they flew off. (
 
I think the same thing happened before - was it round the time His Holiness made his first appearance on the balcony?
 
There is already one thread about this. It’s called nature and the cycle of life.

I don’t believe this was coincidental, if you know what I mean! 😦
 
To the readers of this thread: do NOT get superstitious. It is a sin to apply power and meaning to natural things, because it is an intentional self-deception. Not to mention a waste of time.

Birds eat birds. Yes, I know it’s a shock.

To apply higher meaning to an “omen” like this is ridiculous.

How about a conspiracy? Ah? Ah?

Some people infiltrated the event and had intelligence that the doves were being released today, then they set up a seagull and a crow minutes before the doves.

Disclaimer: I have a very active imagination, things expressed here may or may not be true. But what about a conspiracy? Ah? Ah?

Ok. Ha. That’s somewhat funny. So what? What difference does it make? Someone really hates the pope. What else is new?

Not quite if the released doves had been domesticated to the point where they depended on humans to eat and survive.

I don’t see where this would be an omen of bad things to happen, however.
 
I’m not at all superstitious but I do like the accidental symbolism. It’s a symbol of what peacemakers can expect in a violent world.

I agree with you.

There is nothing wrong with looking at those photos abstractly and drawing personal conclusions.

For those who feel they have never witnessed a miracle in nature…
A small bird flew into an open church one Sunday morning. It flew all around and had parishioners gasping. A devout usher stepped to the center middle aisle. The bird flew down to his feet and he picked up the bird with his hands.
…no pictures for you…just my memory and words.

Saint Rose of Lima was said to have a gentle connection with birds in her garden. I know there are other saints with gentle connections with nature.
 
Birds attack other birds, and can be extremely vicious about it, even if the other birds are not freaks.
I saw a group of crows going after a bald eagle once.

On one level the story has an eerie quality about it, some of the tone and mood of those old Omen movies about Damien. White doves in this case are intentionally symbolic, so even a random, perfectly natural event that is perfectly explainable cannot help but play a role in the associations that spring to mind.

You’re right about that. They attack people and pets as well, especially if they have a nest nearby. One year I had to wear a helmet just to mow the lawn. My neighbor was afraid too. True story.

I can see power and supernatural meaning in things without it being sinful.
Are you suggesting it is sinful to consider such things as signs and wonders?

Really? What about dreams? Signs and wonders?
What about the need to recognize satan’s ominous deceptions?
 
This reminds me of a book on Fatima I had long, long ago, The White Doves of Peace by Fr. Cacella. It was about these doves that traveled with the pilgrim statute…some were also attacked.

Without being superstitious, I wish I could remember more of that book!
