The Pope is not really wrong, just a bit careless on the feelings of others. Like why change the Vatican II’s version of the prayer now? Its been working swell for half a century.
I have no problem at all underlining again and again the differences between us, the problem comes when I start speaking for you and I really don’t know you well enough to do that so all I can do so far is caricature.
When I look at the Middle East and the conflict between Isreal and Palestine, I see two groups of people who don’t know how to forgive. Rather, I see two groups of people who seem to exist for vengence. The Isrealies have created gross injustices in the occupied territories. And of course the palestianians are also not innocent. Hence, I see the pope as being correct in allowing the jewish people to see the forgiving words of christ and christ’s exhortion to love your neighbor and enemy without malice very welcomed. The Isrealies and the Palestinians should stress forgiveness and not vengence. And conversion would be necessary in doing so.
Oh, I’m talking about examples of the contradiction inherent in the idea of free expression being a quintessential American outlook. You don’t have to just keep on giving examples of the problem with the paradigm; once was, actually, quite enough.
I agree. If the Jews and Arabs both convert to Catholicism, there wont be anymore middle east conflict.
He didn’t change the Vatican II version of the prayer. That one is still in use in the Ordinary Form of the Mass (Novus Ordo/Pauline). What he changed is the prayer in the Extraordinary form of the Mass (Tridentine).

Well that’s a different question. Although I can’t be sure since none of them are alive to ask, my guess is that they didn’t feel the need to.

Around the world, millions of Catholics are celebrating Good Friday, when they commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. But for many Jews, this year’s ceremonies leave a bitter aftertaste, due to a controversial new version of a prayer that many claim is anti-Semitic.
Last month, the Vatican announced that Pope Benedict XVI had revised the so-called “Good Friday Prayer for the Jews” which forms part of the Tridentine Mass, often referred to as the Latin Mass. The new version, translated from the Latin, reads: “Let us also pray for the Jews: That our God and Lord may illuminate their hearts, that they acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the Savior of all men*.”
Several leading Jewish organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee and the International Jewish Committee on Inter-Religious Consultations, have strongly criticized the new wording of the prayer. However only the very small minority of Catholics who celebrate the Good Friday mass in Latin will actually hear the allegedly anti-Semitic version of the prayer.

This original version was toned down at the 1962-1965 Second Vatican Council which introduced many far-reaching reforms of the Catholic Church, including replacing the Tridentine Mass with vernacular liturgies. The Good Friday Prayer then became: “Let us pray for the Jewish people, the first to hear the word of God, that they may continue to grow in the love of his name and in faithfulness to his covenant.”

It’s amazing how much people are reading into this. It’s wearing your faith on your shoulder like a chip. We have a right to our faith beleif. That is the same sentement expressed by many if not most Christians, Protestant and Catholic. But I’m still contending with a Messianic Jew that is calling all of us the “whore of Babylon”. This is just over the top to me…this exageration of emotions about this statement.
