Some years back I was posting on this forum frequently about my husbands porn habit, looking for answers and guidance on how to react. I received many helpful comments and lots of prayers…
For a while, I thought that he was done looking at porn, but on several occasions I have been proven wrong about that. I think there have been several stints where he has went a month or two without looking at anything but that’s the longest.
Several months ago I ran across an email where he had responded to a craigslist ad locally letting the girl know he was in the same town as she was. I work night shift and he emailed while I was working an overnight shift. He claims, and I believe him, that nothing more happened after he responded to the email. He says that she never responded back. Still, I know there was some amount of intent or curiosity, but I just can’t imagine him following through with it.
Most recently I discovered that he has been looking at porn on his phone. He’s only had his own smartphone for the past year, but I think it’s been a fairly frequent habit over the past year for sure. Two nights ago I asked him how often he is doing this, and he said once or twice a week “to get off”. We have nowhere near that frequency of marital relations, and it is repugnant to me that he has continued on with this habit one way or another over the past 10 years of our entire marriage.
What has compounded all of this, is that he has a new friend at work that to me, is an unlikely friend – he is probably at least 15 years older than my husband, he’s divorced and new to the area. He has been to our house for dinner several times, at my husband’s request I cook a nice meal for him to come and eat with us as a family. This person has attended my own family get-together with my immediate family at Thanksgiving, and my husband has spent hours staying late at work visiting with him. I have asked husband several times what led to his divorce… My husband has always said he doesn’t know but he does know that his children want nothing to do with him. Because of this, I remained especially curious what led to his divorce and thus have repeatedly inquired about it.
Two nights ago during a conversation where I was confronting my husband about his continued porn viewing, he decided to confess to me that the cause of this person’s divorce was pornography. I feel so confused and twisted up inside, I don’t even really know WHY I am so upset at this point. Is it the fact that he kept a secret from me, or is it the fact that he’s become best friends with someone else with a pornography addiction? Or am I angry because I’ve become so desensitized to discovering his porn viewing that I tolerate it so very well? When we were dating I told him that this is a deal-breaker. But time and time again he has shown me nothing but disrespect.
Do I need to take a break to get some perspective? For the past three months I have been through the worst bout of anxiety and panic of my entire life. I honestly had a nervous breakdown and didn’t leave my house for a whole week. I don’t attribute it directly to this issue, but at the same time I wonder if I just have lost touch with how all of this really affects me. I really can’t put my finger on what triggered this horrible wave of anxiety… but I do feel like a major component of it is the lack of intimacy in my marriage. I feel so lonely and so far away from any real deep human contact. My husband does not know how to be intimate with me- on an emotional level especially. Would anyone advise the separation? I just feel like I can’t see the forest from the trees right now…
