A coalition of artists and avowed atheists plan to stage an exhibition of pornographic photography in a local Catholic church in Toledo, the primatial see of Spain.
The International Federation of Atheists announced plans to host the exhibit at the church of San Vicente in December, to coincide with the group’s convention. The exhibit, to be entitled Sanctorum, would include blasphemous as well as pornographic images, mocking Christ and the saints.
The atheist group was invited to use San Vicente church by the Toledo Art Circle, which has used the church regularly for the past 15 years for artistic displays and cultural events.

This is unfortunate. Isn’t there anything sacred in that country anymore? I only have one question for these people: Will they feel ok if some “artists” posted pornographic materials on their mother’s graves?

As a clarification, I would like to mention that the Church is really a former Church, and is no longer owned or operated by the RCC or the local archdiocese. From what I understand, it’s actually been de-sanctified and turned into a bar. I’m pretty disappointed that CWNEWS neglected to clarify this point; it is NOT a Catholic Church anymore. At least, this is sloppy reporting; at most, it’s a slur against the Archdiocese, trying to make things sound worse than they actually are. We don’t need exaggeration–God knows we Catholics have enough challenges!!

I agree, but it is sad that a place where Masses were once offered, babies were baptized, couples were wed, etc. has now become a porn exhibit…😦

I kind of wish that the archdiocese had torn down the building instead of selling it or whatever.

IMO they should just demolish de-consecrated churches, and maybe just sell the materials & the land.
Yeah I know, impractical…still.

I agree with you!
I know this is not the same level of offense as this story, but my town’s business offices are in what was once the Presbyterian Church…I have to pay my taxes & my water bill, in the back of the sanctuary, and when they have local court, the judge sits behind the altar while court is in session…😦 I always think of Jesus driving the money changers out of the temple…

A local Congregational church near me is now a liquor store. (The church outgrew its original quarters and moved.) It’s a bit weird looking at bottles of hard liquor with religious themed stained glass windows along the walls. :ehh:

RE: OP

And Satan is laughing all the way. Imagine what a victory that seems to be for the side of darkness.

Things may get worse before they start turning for the better again.

And also, I think we here in the US must keep watch on what’s happening in Europe. The Church Militant must get more militant; not afraid to speak out against the forces of atheism and relativism.

actually this article is good for us; by neglecting to mention it is a former Church, and by constantly refering to those ruffians as “avowed atheists”, it draws sympathy from the reader and makes one angry at the militant atheist movement. The writer did well, whether intentionally or by accidentally

The solution to this was accomplished 2000 years ago when Jesus cleared the temple of the money changers with a whip, saying "My Father’s house is a house of prayer". That would be beautiful to see it happen again at this location.

Interesting, instead of cries of “foul” toward the Catholic News agency for “neglecting” to mention truthfully that this is no longer a Catholic church, it’s the “money changers” in the “church which is not a church” and the “atheists” which remains the problem…not the “untruth” being told. Perhaps a question on the “morality” about such news reporting should be posted in “Moral Theology” and see what others think.
