Pornography is 'a sexual Katrina' tearing men down, says speaker

NEW ORLEANS (CNS) – The scourge of addiction to pornography, especially among men, has created “a sexual Katrina” that is destroying families, church and society, a prominent speaker on sexual integrity told a recent gathering of men in New Orleans.

Dan Spencer, an advisory board member of the “My House” anti-pornography initiative in the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kan., told 200 men at the 13th annual Morning Men’s Spirituality event that pornographic addiction is so prevalent it qualifies as one of the major battles the Catholic Church must speak out about and fight.

“It is the single largest battle, in my opinion, in this room – the battle of pornography,” said Spencer, an advertising and marketing executive and consultant. “There are men here – and not just one or two – who are addicted to pornography and who struggle with sexual issues. This sexual Katrina is destroying homes, families, men, our society, our church. This is enormous.”

Spencer, who spoke Oct. 17 at St. Rita Church, said as many as 54 percent of men admit to viewing pornography in a one-month period, and 10 percent are addicted, including those who regularly attend church.

The media gradually turned up the volume on sex and sexual situations. Those selling porn hired very expensive lawyers to help them, arguing freedom of speech and expression.

1968 Hippies yelling “free love” promoted sex with anybody and that “I don’t need no piece of paper to live with my old lady.” The Church published Humanae Vitae, warning spouses that you will be tempted to cheat on your spouse if you use The Pill and other forms of artificial contraception. The Hippies tell the young to not trust anyone over 30. Mom, dad, priests and nuns don’t know anything.

1969 The movie Bob and Carol, Ted and Alice introduces viewers to wife swapping.

1970s So-called Adult Bookstores appear out of nowhere selling images of prostitutes.

Abortion is legalized.
Homosexuality is removed as a disorder from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual by non-scientific vote
The National Organization for Women drives a wedge of fear and mistrust between women and men.

1980s No-Fault Divorce completes its sweep of the country. TV becomes more sexualized. Movies portray divorced men meeting at the bar and telling their buddies that they’ll find someone “better.”

1990s Movies where boy meets girl, fall in love and get married, are replaced by boy meets girl, hop in the sack and declare each other a couple.
Shock jocks talking about sex on the radio.
Rap songs that disrespect women and promote violence.
On ABC, viewers are introduced to profanity and partial nudity on NYPD Blue. For what?

The internet and porn 24/7.

In the 90’s, Church parking lots emptied and mall parking lots filled up, and a Dictatorship of Relativism was born. “Do your own thing, man. I mean, your thing may not be my thing but that’s OK. It’s cool, whatever it is.” No absolutes. Right? Wrong? What’s that? If it feels good, do it.

Now, supermarkets and gas stations sell porn. Not long ago, People magazine had a shot of Britney in a see-through dress. Where is her mom?

Complain, politely. Point out that the words decency, modesty and self-respect still exist. Wherever you are in your struggle with porn, stick with Jesus and pray for forgiveness. No one is unredeemable but we must ask God for His help. The devil can be beaten, just stick with Jesus. If you stumble, get back up and stick with Jesus.

I think it has warped mens ideas of what women should look, act and dress.
Now the ideal is super skinny with fake boobs,fake tan and bleached hair.
Paris Hilton is “Hot” but i would not call her pretty.

You are ABSOLUTELY right.Thank you for your post.It is a succinct and accurate precis of the last 42 years that commenced when I was eighteen years old and naievely and tragically supportive of this “progress”. I agree with posts condemning pornography and only want to offer a suggestion. There is a book out titled “Empire of Illusion” that in one section describes in graphic detail the vicious demeaning of women who star in “adult entertainment” pornographic productions. The whole production is sickening and repulsive. Women are treated as objects to be reviled, misused and then thrown away - treated worse in some ways than animals. Anyone who entertains the notion that pornography is harmless needs to read this book.

Tell him if there is nothing wrong with looking at pornography he should have no problems with you sharing with your/his friends and family his new hobby. AnnaRose, there a couple of threads in “family life” forum that can show your husband how much his aptitude towards porn can hurt family members. On thread started by Bmaj is particularly good. She (bmaj) has also started a wife of porn viewers support group in CAF groups. You might want to check that out.

He is cheating on YOU.Plain and simple.As a man I struggled with this problem and I recognize this filth for what it is:the denigration and debasement of a gift from God meant to part of the Sacrament of marriage.Ask your husband to pray for guidance and for God to develop his conscience.It is also addictive and desensitizing.I can assure you,in your husband’s heart of hearts,he KNOWS what he is doing is wrong.He’s not lying to you he’s lying to himself.
