I have not grown up religious but now I feel I want to be Catholic.

I’m trying to be a better person. I’m trying to stop watching porn. I have always felt like it poisons my mind. I am not an insane porn addict but have watched it too much growing up, if I could go back ten years to when I was 13 I never would have started. I am trying to ease off it but it’s tough. I don’t think I can stop cold turkey. Ideally I would but I can’t. Can I try to ease off it? I feel guilty every time I watch it and afterwards I can’t even pray because I can’t face God. But I feel like if I’m going to make a lasting change it’s best to ease off it, that’s the viable way for me. I’m trying to be a better person but is it morally unacceptable that I can’t stop cold turkey? Please help.

it is extremely hard to break free from porn. prayer and perseverance is the only weapon.
stay away from any occasion of sin (porn) as much as possible. this means staying off the internet as much as possible, avoiding looking at girlie mags on the bookstands, avoiding porn tv channels etc.

never, NEVER give up the fight. you CAN overcome porn, with God’s grace.

:signofcross:

There’s always the temptation do do things we shouldn’t, but along with that, there’s the temptation to believe that we cannot do without them, or cannot just stop them cold turkey.

Satan tells us, sure, it’s OK to just try and cut back, because then it will be easier to stop. Don’t believe it. That’s the same lie that says, “Oh, just one more time won’t hurt”.

The other lie is that you can’t face God because he won’t forgive you. Believing that keeps us slaves to our sin.

You are correct in that you can’t do it alone, though. Stop cold turkey and pray for the strength to “stay stopped”. Find another outlet. When you feel tempted, go exercise, or better yet, go take a cold shower, no kidding. There is nothing that squelches sexual desire more consistantly than a cold shower. After one or two of those, you’ll be better motivated to find something else you enjoy doing than watching porn.

morally you should stop cold turkey, because morally we are to avoid all near occasions of sin(going somewhere or doing something or keeping company with someone you know will lead you to sin)
but i do understand how hard it is, and you also have to just be patient with yourself, because God is and has been patient with you all this time, He knows that you can overcome all this, and it is by Him that you will, He has already led you this far, so have hope and just trust in God and always turn to Him in all your temptations and every other problem,

the only reason we fall is because we rely on ourselves to much, remember when St. Peter trusted in his own strength when he said “even though i should die with thee, I will not deny thee.” (Matt. 26:35). and only a little bit later he not only denied Jesus, but protested under oath that he did not know him,
but put your confidence in God like St. Paul, who said “I can do all things in him who strengtheneth me.” and then you will succeed, because it is not by you that you succeed, but by God,
St. Catherine of Siena when she was tempted always humbled herself and put all her confidence in God, and one day she heard the devil cry out in a rage “Cursed be thou, and cursed be he who taught thee this means of overcoming me.”
the key is not just trust and confidence in God, but also humility, knowing what we are, knowing we are nothing, and that we can do nothing without God except sin,
and so the first step before temptation is always to seek the help of God and His heavenly companions, and also seek His help even before temptation, as soon as you wake up each day, recommend yourself to God, put yourself in His hands and under His Mothers mantel, pray every day, especially the rosary,

well, as for some practical advice in overcoming this sin, along with every other sin of impurity,
first i’d like to recommend saying 3 Hail Marys every morning and night for the intention of purity and holiness, i have been saying it for over a year now, and it has yet to fail me(although i still have to try my best not to expose myself to things that i know will temp me)

another great remedy for lust is fasting, fasting is the most powerful tool against sins of the flesh and also a very powerful means of overpowering the devil(in ourselves and others)
but i would recommend reading up on that and talking to your priest about it before starting,

confession is another very powerful means in overcoming this and every other sin, confession(when done properly) gives you extra special graces in overcoming your sins because it is a sacrament, and without confession or the Eucharist it is very hard to resist sin because those sacraments give you the graces necessary to grow in your virtues and grow in love for God,
the virtues are another means of overcoming all your sins, because the virtues are the direct opposite of vice, and they are necessary in order to get to heaven, because they are what makes God work through you, who is all goodness and all love,
so practice all your virtues, but first practice humility, which is the foundation of all the other virtues,
there are many great books on the virtues to help you out with that.

another means of overcoming this sin is to just avoid the places you fall into it, which would be the computer right? of course i’m sure there are things on the computer you need to do, but there are other tactics to use so you don’t give in,
like internet filters for one, like netmop.com/
and also having someone in the room with you when you go on the computer, or at least near enough that you wouldn’t do anything,
or try not going on the computer except when you need to, and then get off as soon as you’re none, because one big cause of falling into temptation is idleness, keeping yourself busy is always a good way to avoid this sin.

well…i think that’s enough for now, you should also talk to your priest about it, he will give you more advice, and just pray every day, in the morning, at night, and whenever you are tempted,
and if you have anymore questions i’d be glad to help.

ok, hope this helps, take care.

The brain craves pleasure. The more you feed it, the more it wants. It can be fed by sex, drugs, food, gambling, materialism, etc. or holiness.

My 2 cents: start weaning yourself by denying yourself “the happy ending.” The less pleasureful it is, the less you’ll crave it, and the more you can control it. Pat yourself on the back for progress. It will be positive reinforcement. Remember, Love is ultimately all about what’s in the heart and soul, not the physical pleasure.

If one chooses a life of selfish indulgence of the basic instincts, one will walk around like a person with a teaspoon and a sugar bowl: dipping the teaspoon into the sugar bowl frequently, taking a sweet lick that doesn’t last, constantly searching for the next temporary high via sex, drugs, materialism, extreme vanity, gambling, food, pursuit of trying to invent something artificially different for the few seconds of shallow amusement it provides, to no long term satisfaction. Once the temporary high wears off, the search for the next high continues indefinitely.

If one chooses to give one’s life to the Church’s way of sacrificial, true love for spouse and kids, one can experience the True love that makes one’s heart sing and will rock you to the depths of your bones. Deep, romantic, sacrificial, True Love via God’s Covenant for man and woman is The Way, The Truth, and The Life that BOTH of you will eventually need to commit to if you desire long term success.

EVERYONE needs to make a choice of which of the 2 lifestyles to PRIMARILY pursue. There’s no other way. Pop culture is a giant wedge that will force passionate people to decide, one path or the other. The Soul can be free and made clean again through Reconciliation. Forgive self and each other. We are only human. Forget the past. This is the chance for a new beginning. That’s what I love most about the Catholic Church: the Soul can be free and clean and new if you forgive and are forgiven. True Love is always possible for anyone with a clean soul, regardless of the past. If being influenced by pop culture causes sin, then it is our duty to minimize it’s influence on our lives by DECREASING our exposure to it.

Imagine if you actually really nailed 25 of the hottest women that you could possibly conjure up, every which way imaginable. Then what would you do next? What can you do for an encore? Nothing. You would have scratched that itch. You’d be bored in knowing that you can’t top yourself with that current set of values and priorities. There’s no future in it. THAT’S when you look to the depth of the Church for Soul food and the Way to Live! You came to the right place.👍

Don’t worry about what is the moral RULE, you have to figure that out yourself can you remove yourself from our society - not so easily. So you have to say I am watching this program, movie what ever, and this is totally corrupt. I am watching someone tell me how sex or attraction is suppose to be. Is it real for me? Is life really like that?

I don’t think having sexual urges is unnatural, you are a very, young man. I recall being a young woman of that age and I had sexual feeling that were a really big part of being in my twenties. Nature, decided to make us horny at are peak time to be parents - when we have energy and good health.

Intellectually we are aware of this appetite and can be embarrassed and even shamed by the church for giving in. Point is it all passes. It is your attitude to woman that matters if you see them as hot chicks that you want to nail. You are losing a deeper connection to humanity that crosses over less respect self control, then you slip again and lose your sense of accountablity, and it snowballs. So that is the moral of the story.

Everything in moderation, in it’s time, and never let it be a hobby. Think of it like candy, as a kid you craved it, now it’s ok, now and then. Ease off but don’t forget you are human and God would rather us be honest sinners than deceitful pretenders who don’t know our strengths and beliefs.

ps Try the 20 minute thing, if you think you want something wait 20 minutes, and do something else, after 20 minutes you will probably forget the craving

Good luck, and God Bless

Are you serious? Are you unaware that pornography is/can be an addiction?

Your advice is like telling an alcoholic to try taking only one drink a day.

“God would rather us be honest sinners”???

Hello! Satan knows our weaknesses far, far better than even we do ourselves.

Sure, try doing the 20 minute thing. I guarantee that very soon it will become 21 “just one more minute”, then 25, then instead of forgetting the craving, you’ll be ensnared right back where you were in the beginning.

When we try to rationalize sin, that’s what happens. Christ tells to be holy, not to be pretty holy. We simply cannot make space for sin in our lives.

To the OP, think about the advice in this last post. You are very correct in saying that porn poisons your (and everyone else’s mind). I hope you conclude, as I have, that taking a little poison now and then is just as harmful as taking big doses all the time; it still kills us spiritually, regardless of whether we are Protestant or Catholic.

Pray for strength, Bro.

Even though you are not Catholic, I agree with the Hail Marys. Anyone can pray the Rosary. The Rosary is Christ centered along with being very powerful. I strive to pray it daily & the days I miss it because of my laziness, it opens up a path for the devil. And the devil is relentless along with knowing our weaknesses. Perseverance in prayer is the key.

It is definitely an addiction. Just don’t give up. Pray to God and ask for strength. For Catholics, get the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Yes, God gave us certain desires but He also gave us self-control. The media is constantly telling us we can do whatever. I suggest finding a Catholic radio station in your area.

God bless,
Ed

i know what you’re going through, trying to undo the scars that sin has left our soul and our mind

persevere. God knows your intentions. the fight is hard and it will be long, just keep praying. when you fall down (fall into the sin again), don’t be ashamed to face God. He knows you’re trying to change and its no simple process, pray for more guidance and more strength

The Rosary (Hail Mary) and Fasting are very powerful weapons in spiritual warfare…perhaps changing the location of your computer to a more public area of your house and only using it when your family is around would help. Also, be wary of friends and family that struggle with the same sin, as they could easily dragg you down with them.

Hail Mary, full of grace.
Our Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Yes it passes, desire wands with age. THe only people that stay addictied are those that don’t try to change. Yes, some people need more intense help, but if you fill you life with other interests you soon find your not thinking about sex or drink in gratifying ways.

As for being holy that takes years, and years of work and frankly most of us are not cut out to be priest or nuns, we have to deal with what is worldly and what is holy here in the midst of things.

We have free will, meaning we struggle with our own powers on this earth before submitting to God.

As for rationalizing sin, this is not what I am doing, I want someone new to the church to understand, they will fall, but not to stay on the ground because you can’t reach the impossible expections of perfection.

He has to know WHAT sin is in his intellect as well as his heart. If you can not see that it is our thinking and our actions that lead to - spiritual death, how can you turn from sin?

Further, you need to be able to see that by following one that teaches compassion and brotherhood this leads to the light. At one point God wants you to make the descernment out of your heart, not out of a set of laws.

God wants all sinners to repent, but he also, wants you to come with love to Him not out of fear but in knowledge and trusting of his ways.

John Tauler (c.1300-1361), Dominican at Strasbourg
Sermon 8
“Rise, take up your mat, and walk.” (see John 5:1-16)

Our Lord came to the pool of Bethezda. There he found a man who had been ill for thirty-eight years and said to him: «Do you want to be well?»… Children, take good note that this sick man had been there for a very long time, for years. This man was destined to serve God’s glory, not death (Jn 11,4). Oh, if only we would try hard to understand, in a spirit of real patience, the profound teaching contained in the fact that this sick man had waited thirty-eight years for God to heal him and tell him to walk!
This is spoken to people who, having scarcely begun to live a life slightly apart and not seeing themselves at once produce the great results they expected, believe it all to be wasted and complain about God as though he were treating them unjustly. How few there are who possess the noble virtue of being able to abandon and surrender themselves, who accept themselves for what they are and bear their infirmities, handicaps and temptations until the Lord himself cures them... What power and self-control would be granted to such a one! To him would it truly be said: «Stand up! You have no right to be lying there any more; you should be setting out victoriously from every bondage, be unbound and walk in all freedom. You will carry your bed - that is to say, whatever was formerly carrying you, you must now take up and carry in power and strength.» Whoever the Lord himself delivers would be delivered indeed; he would walk rejoicing and, after waiting so long, would win a wonderful freedom of which they are deprived who imagine they can deliver themselves or break their bonds before the time.

Wow, this is beautiful. It took me a foolish 39 years to learn how “to see.” I failed to see the big picture until recently. It is only when we give ourselves up to live by His Way that we learn to rejoice and be free.

I’m sorry to say that it sounds like your “gradual method” is not working.

I have found that in matters such as these, breaking clean is the best and most direct way of illiciting a resolute message to your own concupiscience and to the devil.

If you have any material that is slightly pornographic, even if its “soft porn” like playboy or penthouse…throw it out! Don’t keep a single issue nor any other magazine even if its not in the same genre of those aforementioned publications.

DVDs, cassettes, anything that is reminiscent of visual stimulus…throw it out!

TV shows and channels that are not only pornographically explicit but also those shows and channels that have morally objectionable or suggestive material or subjects, don’t watch. They serve as a fetish which leads to other things.

Make a conscious effort to avert your eyes also.

The more drastic the break the better it is to distinguish and discern your progress. A “snails pace” approach has the potential to submerge you back into a state of desensitization to the sins of carnality.

Break away today, don’t put it off to tomorrow or even later on.

Go to confession on a weekly basis. Confession is the inexhaustible source of renewable grace and you need God’s grace to combat this scourge.

Cultivate a life of prayer and a life of the spirit…these things are your life-blood.

I’ve been where you are, hon! Actually, I’m kinda still where you are! I guess you could say I stopped CT, but boy it ain’t easy. My thoughts start wandering before I even realize, and my dreams since have been…not helping.

I go play with my dogs, or pop in my favorite show, which is always a great distraction. Praying, like, every time I think of it. Even if it’s just a Yo God, sup? helps too

Pornography addiction is a serious addiction, It does poison your mind and your view about sexuality. Pray, Pray, Pray!

Peace!

You’re right… you can’t stop cold turkey… but with God “all things are possible”.
  1. Get rid of any porn you may still have & cut off all connections to it (even if that means shutting off the computer)
  2. Go see a priest, he will be able to help counsel you… inquire also about RCIA, it is a program that you could go through to become catholic
  3. Pray, pray , pray… you say you are not religious… well it is never too late to start getting serious with your faith & your relationship with the Lord, start reading your Bible more often
  4. Spend more time with family/friends
  5. Spend more time occupying yourself with work (such as exercise, work around the house etc)
In the meanwhile you are in my prayers brother…

Your brother in Christ,
Zachary
