Portsmouth bishop halts regular Mass in Polish
Bishop Crispian Hollis of Portsmouth has dismayed Poles in his diocese by telling them that they cannot have weekly Polish-language Masses in their local church.
He said in a letter that priests were unanimous in opposing the idea of a Polish Mass celebrated each week.
Such a Mass has been held at St Swithun’s Church in Southsea, Portsmouth, since June when an extra priest arrived from Poland.
He said: “Some of the Polish friends I have consulted appreciate the occasional opportunity to keep in touch with their cultural roots, but they do not think that a separate Sunday liturgy would help in the important work of integration within the local Catholic community. This is also the view of the clergy in the area.”
Okay, English friends, what is it with your Bishops?
Over here there is a long tradition of ethnic parishes (a tradition now faded as ethnics have integrated and moved from cities to suburbs). In my hometown there was an Italian “national” parish that offered Mass in Italian on Sundays. I don’t think church unity or “integration” was harmed.

I suspect that the Poles are rather too, um, Catholic for the English Bishops.

Perhaps, the bishops in England fear that with a declining Catholic population, the only masses they will eventually have will be in Polish.

If the Church had stayed with Latin in the new rite we wouldn’t have this happen.😃

Don’t be so sure. Ethnic parishes didn’t spring up with the vernacular Novus Ordo, they existed & thrived long before Vatican II.

Back in the 1970’s a cousin of mine fled the communist in Poland. He now has is wife and family here as well. When he was first here, I asked him whether he was Catholic. His answer was, “Are the Polish anything else?”

Wasn’t there a similar story to this in the London (England) Diocese in the past year??
