I’ve always been fascinated by these things but was wondering… are there such thing as ghosts? Shadow people? Possession? Real exorcism? Please explain. Thanks.

Ghosts-maybe; Shadow people-very careflly ask Coast to Coast; Real exocism-real; .Possession-real:)

I lived in 2 haunted houses…never actually saw a ghost, but felt weird there, and heard lots of scary things…my mom said she saw some pretty freaky things in one of the houses…

Demonic possession and exorcisms are real. Ghosts, meaning human spirits or what appear to be human spirits still active on earth after death, are more of a question mark but I think most exorcists will tell you they are real. I have no idea what “shadow people” are.

Go Google Shadow People. There are so many things about them. It’s very hard to describe so you have to look 'em up yourself.

Real possession and real exorcism are definitely realities of the world. Good reading on this would include:
  1. The Rite by Matt Baglio
  2. Hostage to the Devil by Malachi Martin
  3. An Exorcist Tells His Story by Fr Gabriel Amorth
Ghosts are more of a question mark… not that there isn’t SOME phenomenon out there, but as to what causes it. Are these things caused by human spirits after death? Eh, possible, but we are taught that after judgement there are three and only three options: purgatory, heaven, or hell. SOME theologians have posited that perhaps a stint in purgatory MIGHT involve some time back on earth in places that might affect the soul, but I prefer other options: 1) evil spirits, 2) psychological and other natural phenomenon, or 3) that these “ghosts” are merely the reflection of people in the past without any will or ability to act independently (kind of like a footprint in the sand is a reflection of people who WERE present but are no longer).

As far as shadow people go, if they do exist they appear to be evil spirits… but I generally think these cases are most likely a psychological phenomenon caused by the limited ability to see well at peripherals (since most “shadow people” are observed only in peripheral vision, where the eye can only detect black and white and so the brain automatically inserts details/color… sometimes incorrectly)

Will have to check these out.

I see I see.

People have seem them head on not just peripheral vision.

The Catholic Church is actually rather careful to NOT say anything about ghosts, one way or another. It’s kinda like the question about whether Mary died before her assumption - the Church deliberately sidesteps the question.

Demonic threats are real

but please before anyone does google shadowy people etc, not everything on there or on wikipedia is true sadly. People will put a lot of ficticious rubbishy stuff there. The web is dangerous for vulnerable people who can’t sort out fact from fiction because of dishonest people. So just because on google its there don’t make it real per se take care.

Truth.

Shadow people are real. When I was involved in the occult I used to see them all the time. But after I went back to Catholicism and started praying the rosary daily I haven’t seen them again. I think that they might be a type of weak demon or something. They never attacked me, they just appeared around my house. But don’t worry about them just always ask God to protect your home and yourself. And also remember that sometimes it’s just your mind playing tricks on you, but if you actually see their face or see them moving or crouching under tables then you have shadow people in your house.

Crouching under my table? Eek! That would be very weird and scary. But seeing them walk around and stuff would be scary too but not as scary. Seeing their face. I think I read or heard that they mostly have red eyes.

Mind playing tricks… Gosh, I have had many experiences in that case. Stupid brain.

Here’s my ghosts/possessions/paranormal resources copy-paste I’ve accumulated.

Exorcism, ghost, etc… resources:

MP3s
Fr. James LeBar interview. A very good interview as I recall, stories, characteristics… (sadly no longer available but his name may be worth a search)
Fr. Thomas Euteneuer interview. Another good speaker, characteristics… (Fr. Euteneuer has since admitted to improprieties with a woman, and I believe no longer does exorcisms, but his talks are informational and occurred before the incident, if I recall correctly)
Fr. Thomas Euteneuer, Exorcism Then And Now interview. Haven’t heard this one.
Matt Baglio, The Making of an Exorcist interview mentioned earlier in the thread. I wasn’t as in to this interview, he followed a priest around in training for exorcism, he gives a few stories, but not a lot of detail as I recall.
Another Fr. Euteneuer, An Evening with an Exorcist.

There was an exorcism workshop in early 2008 lead by Fr. Jose Antonio Fortea, done in 4 sessions + Q&A. The first session was a talk by an escapee of the demonic, Moira Noonan. Here are those talks:

Moira Noonan, talks about her involvement with the occult and her rescue, many stories, interesting talk.
Fr. Fortea, talk 1 - all his talks are fascinating. He gives much detail as he familiarizes his audience with the nature of this subject.
Fr. Fortea, talk 2
Fr. Fortea, talk 3
Fr. Fortea, Q&A session

Books
Fr. Gabriele Amorth’s: An Exorcist Tells His Story He has a sequel which I have yet to read: An Exorcist, More Stories. A caveat on this one - Fr. Amorth is known for sensationalizing.

Fr. Fortea has a book, An Interview with an Exorcist, which is also on my to-read list.

Moira Noonan, mentioned above, her book: Ransomed from Darkness

And Matt Baglio’s The Rite: The Making of an Exorcist. (along with my review of the excellent book and movie ;))

Article
Here is an article I’ve referenced before by the aforementioned Fr. Gabriele Amorth, The Real Exorcist. He gives different kinds of possession and some definitions.

Video
Betty Brennan, former satanist tells her story. (edit 4/11/11: her talk is available on Lighthouse Catholic Media CDs now, online here, or perhaps in your parish’s lobby)

My beliee is that ghosts as generally souls in Purgatory They’re frightening by what they are, sad feeling, eerie…but a true “ghost” cannot hurt you. If you’re watching a ghost program, and the ghost has left scratches, hurt people. thrown things…you know it’s not of God.

Demonic/ghostly possessions happen, even in the bible but one must not simply conclude that a person who happens to be mentally ill is actually possessed.
Jesus performed many exorcisms, even the Popes, the Bishops. As to ghosts, I haven’t seen one with my very eyes but my mind tells me they do exist. Ghosts may be violent or be benign. If they get violent then chances are, they might possess a person who may be spiritually weak.

I wish more people would realize this.

God Bless You and Keep You,

I guess it depends on what you mean by “scratches.” For instance, the Museum of the Holy Souls of Purgatory in Rome purports to have relics touched by the hand of a soul in purgatory that has left singe marks.

No, I’m talking more like, when you’re watching a ghost hunting show, one that seems like there might actually be something there, and you see people getting pushed down stairs, threatened to be killed, slashed up their backs.

Most ghost hunting TV shows are fake… I’ve seen them fake it.

in my experience ive seen plenty of ghostly evidence. ive never witnessed a possesion but there is plenty of evidence for them.
