Possession and Ghosts

I was raised a Protestant faith tradition that more or less ignored the paranormal; it just wasn’t something that was talked about. When it was, it was from a sort of cessationist standpoint. Yes, people were possessed by demons in the Bible, but that doesn’t happen anymore. Others adamantly deny the paranormal altogether and say that people experiencing such things are either lying or crazy. One thing I find comforting about Catholicism is that they don’t deny the existence of ghosts and demons, but still approach it with a great deal of caution. I don’t really fear ghosts or demons as much as I used to because now my faith gives me answers about it. I take comfort in the fact that if my house was ever haunted or I was plagued by an evil spirit, I could turn to a priest for answers and help.

I worry about my sister though. She’s still part of the Protestant denomination I grew up in, but she is fascinated by ghosts and demonology. Watches those ghost shows on TV and reads a lot of books on the subject. I don’t think she fully understands the danger in consulting with psychic mediums and trying to contact the dead like they do on TV. I’m also worried that she might lose her faith because her church is almost completely silent about this stuff so she doesn’t have any spiritual guidance in this area. I think she has enough sense not to go “ghost hunting” herself though; she’s heard too many stories about how that ends badly. One of her favorite demonologists (I’m not sure if that’s the proper term in this case) is actually the pastor of a Catholic parish a few towns away. I’m thinking of taking her to visit his church or even trying to meet him; maybe he can give us both some spiritual guidance.
We believe in all that is visible and invisible.

It’s in our creed.

Wearing sunglasses could even be a sin.

It is about putting your faith in God and accepting his justice and destroying vice.
Mt. Cpt. 3 vs. 11

The first sentence is what the priest does.

Jesus’s justice is the second sentence. AKA, the leopard and the kid.

I’ve always been fascinated by these things but was wondering… are there such thing as ghosts?
No
Shadow people?
No
Possession?
No
Real exorcism?
No - see above.
Please explain.
The brain can play tricks on us. Coupled with a heightened sensitivity in some to these things, cultural/perosnal beliefs, insecurity, and so on, some are predisposed to believing, then seeing, such things.
My pleasure 😃

Relying on medication for mental illness is a crutch and can be an act against God. You just as well accept your punishment and get over it through the sacraments and indulgences via corporal and spiritual acts of mercy.
One of the most dangerous and contemptable statements I’ve read on this forum.

Anyone who has seen their doctor and got medication for whatever their illness is, or is seeing a therapist should not, ever, stop their treatment.

The Catholic Church would never suggest such a thing.

I hope such advice as given in the above post is roundly condemned and ignored.

I hope you realize that sun damage to your eyes has absolutely nothing to do with divine intervention and everything to do with the ultraviolet light generated by the sun…

people dont just magicly get diseases, they have causes. Viruses, parasites, bactiria, genetic disorders, bodily injury, tramatic stress, ect. this isnt the 4th century, we understand that these things dont magicly happen, there is a physical cause, if i get the common cold its not because god is mad its because i came into contact with the virus that causes it.

What god tells his people to sit there and die of a treatable condition?

Luke 24

36 They were still talking about all this when he himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you!’

37 In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost.

38 But he said, 'Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts stirring in your hearts?

39 See by my hands and my feet that it is I myself. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have.’

Mental illness, I believe is due to lack of repentance.
So, explain to me why millions of people kill themselves over mental illnesses. Is this God’s doing? Because, last time I checked… suicide is a mortal sin and will send you to Hell.

I disagree. Medicine is run by lawers and pharmaceutical and insurance companies.

Certain medical practices are practiced out of fear of lawsuits.

Just look at painkillers. Overprescribed.

I got them when I twisted my ankle.

You are wrong to make a blanket statement. You make it out of fear.

you are a fear mongerer.

You think Paxil is the answer for everyone. I know better. Your thoughts are better received on an atheist board.

BC they lack God.

Someone caught up with the spirit won’t kill themself.

Someone void of the spirit may kill themself.

Why would God even give them mental illness if He knows what will happen if he does it?

Fire is God’s wrath.

Spirit and fire makes us pure.

It’s the way of the cross.
God would never send anyone to Hell for lack of repentance. He loves everyone and He NEVER stops loving.

Spirit and fire is the means to make one contrite.
As you said before… “one with spirit would not take their life”

One with spirit, my friend, would be repenting a lot more than one without. So… how does one with spirit get mental illness? The devil. The root of everyone going to Hell. The devil will drag everyone he can down to Hell with him. If you believe that God gives people mental illness because they haven’t repented… the devil has tricked you.

Your argument is circular.

And yes, the devil, I believe, is the culprit.

God can use the devil to bring one to repentance.

There would be no reason to bring one to repentance if he hadn’t been deceived and sinned. You repent to go back to a state of baptism.

What? God using the devil? That makes no sense… God, who sent the devil to Hell forever, is now using the devil’s evilness to get people to repent? That’s absolute rubbish.
