Possible Ebola in Grad Student In New Haven

This grad student was recently in Liberia, and the department at the University, unarguably one of the top research facilities in the countries, decided he and his fellow researcher did not need to go into quarantine. Now, he has Ebola symptoms. He has surely been all around New Haven and the University campus. When are authorities going to start taking this seriously?

This is so insane. We are essentially playing with fire and people don’t seem concerned about burning themselves or others!

Of course, just wait for a celebrity to catch it, then there’ll be no end to the wailing and indignant calls for action.
 
Don’t freak out?? 70% of people who catch this disease…DIE!! Those are not good odds. This kills very quickly too!! horrible way to die…its like eating rat poison. It doesn’t take a SWAT TEAM of hospital professionals to take care of someone with the FLU…and they say it takes 20 full time staff to take care of ONE person with Ebola. People don’t understand that if this starts spreading then more and more and more people will get it and then spread it and it will then be harder and harder to contain …as people start dying the reaction will be…those who are afraid to go to work, school, shopping etc. It would be devastating!! We might still be up a creek with the spreading in the third world countries. I don’t see it getting any better in Africa…does anyone else?? It just keeps spreading no matter their efforts…and don’t forget that this virus mutates every time…there are like 5-6 strains now…I could see it spreading airborne eventually due to its mutations. God help us all

This irritates me the most. The whole “it is no big thing” thing. Really? you want to act like it’s nothing? good for you. Ignore us while we are suitably nervous about the reality of the worst virus the world has seen since… I don’t know, ever? Do you really want to compare it to accidents? If someone on the plane next to me has an accident at some point, it’s a shame but it has nothing to do with me. If the person on the plane next to me has been exposed to an active Ebola patient, like the second nurse was, then it directly effects HUNDREDS of people, and then the people those people come in to contact with. Wake up. Would you like to puke up blood until you die? And know that your family will probably too? Me neither.
 
Meanwhile…deep breath…it looks as though the grad student is in the clear. Thank God. But at the same time, the CDC is indeed reaching out to more people admitting that the second nurse was experiencing symptoms while traveling. They want to find the people at the dress shop she visited. I can’t help but wonder at the thought process she went through. 1). Deal with the worst ever case possible in hospital history. 2) be asked to monitor health for 21 days, self restricted. 3) fly home to go dress shopping??

They exaggerate the number of deaths from the flu so they can push the flu vaccine.

Don’t underestimate the flu…Do you know that what is considered one of the very worst pandemics of human history was the flu pandemic of 1918-1919. It killed 50 million people worldwide in the time span of 1 year.
To put that in perspective for you in today’s standards that would be like taking the entire population of the west coast today and killing every man, woman, and child.

The population of California today 38.3 million
Oregon 3.9 million
Washington 6.9 million
Idaho 1.6 million
The total population of these states combined is 50.7 million…Imagine today every man, woman, and child in these four states dieing over the course of 1 year from the flu. That would be devastating.That is what the flu did in 1918. It was devastating

As much as your being driven crazy when people underestimate ebola…I am also driven crazy when people underestimate the flu. I had to work as an ICU nurse during the H1N1 flu virus 5 years ago, while being pregnant…It was H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E, what made me even more passionate about it at the time was that people were not taking it seriously…I’m very passionate about the flu.

Yes I have read a couple of books on the flu pandemic at the end of world war 1 and saw a documentary about it. Fascinating. I heard someone say on tv yesterday that 52, 000 people died last year from the flu in the united states alone. Okay there are 50 states. I did not hear about thousands of people last year dying from the flu. I had guillain-barre when I was 6 years old so I don’t get a flu shot.
The CDC pushes too many vaccines. There can be serious complications from the flu especially for anyone with respiratory problems or if they also get pneumonia. I am not saying a pandemic could not happen again, but I think the CDC are fear mongers.
 
Many of us, Americans, had relatives killed by the Spanish Flu and we might not know it. That was the flu epidemic from around 1918-19 though it may not have hailed from Spain, that is a subject in itself to research.

Both Francisco and Jacinta, 2 of the seers at Fatima got it.

They have said for decades and especially the last 10 years, if Ebola ever broke out, it could be a real problem. I believe these people.

Your figure is for a year and is in round figures, 12,500, for 9 months, per below from the CDC, states reported about 2500 deaths. All the same, H1N1 was a special case and that doesn’t happen every year, it was a Pandemic.

Oh, I just caught the differentiation on this issue,

Let’s say you have 30,000 people die of the flu in America in one year. Now millions of people in America usually will get the flu. This is not to downplay the deaths of these poor people but in change.

If millions of people got Ebola, the same figure as contracts the flu annually, how many of them would die? Even conservatively saying 50% will die, you see how much higher the fatality rate is with ebola than with the flu.
