Hi PaulDupre,

I would be overjoyed to hear the catholic church proclaim Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

I will ask you for a straight answer. Do you believe Romans 10:9. or do you have to add to it.

Edwin,

The Catholic Church does proclaim this–it just doesn’t interpret it in the narrow way you are intrepeting it here. What does “you will be save mean to you?” What do you think Paul means when he says this in the context of the whole letter–which is dealing primarily with “works of the law” not saving the Jews as many were claiming?. It doesn’t work to pull one verse or even two or three and say do you believe it yes or no. If you want to play that game I have a few questions for you:
  1. How about Matthew 6:9-13. “Pray this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as also we have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.”
I ask you for a straight answer. Is this how you pray? Is it the only way you pray–with these words–or do you add to it?

Do you get the point?

Or 2. Do you believe Rev 20:12? “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Also another book was opened, the book of life. And the dead were judged according to their works, as recorded in the books.”

I ask you for a straight answer. Do you believe Rev 20:12 or do you subtract from or change it?

Or 3. Do you believe and proclain Romans 2:6: “For he will render to everyman according to his works:” or do you subtract from or change it?

Edwin G do you understand what the Church teaches? Have really studied its teaching on Salvation? Would a discussion of faith and works be helpful?

The peace of Christ be with you.
Mark
