Saint Onouphrios, known in the west as San Onofre, whose icon is typical of the hermit-saints, so focused on God that they can’t be bothered with things like personal grooming or clothes.

This is a favorite because we got it for a godson whose patron saint is St. Joseph. It is a copy of an icon in the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Portland. I also like the humility it implies…that is, we serve Lord, but the intentions of the Lord are above and beyond us. The Lord hoists himself up by pushing down on St. Joseph’s head; the scroll in the hand he is pushing with is the Word of God. (I also like it that the Lord’s little shoe has been kicked off, a sign of trust in St. Joseph’s fidelity in supporting him.)

Is it okay to buy an athonite icon ? I read multiple times around here that they are not on good terms with roman catholics.

Saints Sabbas, Euthymius, and Anthony, Desert Fathers of the third and fourth centuries. St. Sabbas founded seven monasteries in the Holy Land. St. Euthymius was a miracle worker who contributed much to early monasticism. St. Anthony the Great is considered the Father of Christian Monasticism.
