Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord–Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here–has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 9:17)

Yes…this is one of my favorite paintings of all time. I’ve been to many art museums, and I’ve seen well over 1000 pieces. This one is the easiest for me to remember.

Below is another one I liked. I liked it because I didn’t understand it and I went and read scripture. Hieronymus Bosch depicts Christ in Limbo reaching out to those who are dead. This is an interpretation of 1 Peter 4:6 and Ephesians 4:9.

"But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours." (Matthew 17:27)

Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles. (Acts 1:26)

It’s interesting, I always thought that “cast lots” meant by lottery of some sort, like drawing straws, pulling names out of a hat. But the priest who preached the morning homily said it probably meant they took a vote. He’s an elderly priest and seemed knowledgeable about the Scriptures so I took his word for it.

Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple. I think I saw this one at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Casting lots was a method used by the Jews of the Old Testament and by the Christian disciples prior to Pentecost to determine the will of God. Lots could be sticks with markings, stones with symbols, etc., which were thrown into a small area and then the result was interpreted. ‘The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD’ (Prov. 16:33).

Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. (Acts 9:40)

The miracle of Jesus when he calms the storm in the Sea of Galilee. The painting depicts the storm. Jesus is very calm in this picture.

I have never seen this painting in person. This Rembrandt work was stolen is the biggest art theft in US history in 1990.

When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have come down to us in human form!"Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. (Acts 14)

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 1:20)

I always struggled with the widows mite story. In Mark 12:40 Jesus talks about how the scribes devour widows’s houses. In Mark 12:41 he talks about the widows mite or offering.

I don’t think Jesus is a bit pleased by the widows’ offering. Instead I take it to mean he is upset that she is giving what she needs to survive for the sake of appearances.

I don’t know if there is a painting out there that gives this interpretation. I don’t know how an artist would even paint this type of interpretation.

Perhaps a better way to describe the Widows’ offering is Mark 13 which is immediately after the windows’ mite story. It foretells the destruction of the temple. Jesus says of these great buildings…”Not one stone will be left here upon another”. In a sense the windows’ mite was for nothing. The temple may very well have been destroyed in the widows’ lifetime. Wilhelm von Kaulbach did a good painting of the destruction of the temple below.
