Paul Preaching to Athenians on Mars Hill by Peter F. Rothermel, an American Painter (1860)

From Acts 17:22-24
Then Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, “Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands

The Last Supper by Peter Paul Rubens.

It is a smaller painting meant for a larger painting at a Jesuit Church in Antwerp. As I understand all of Ruben’s work in that church was lost in fire, but this sketch remains. The exchange looks intense as Jesus explains the Eucharist!

I found this one by Carlo Maratti from about 1700 to be very moving. It is called “The Holy Family”. Mary is sitting on a sarcophagus while Jesus likely points out a scripture passage about his death.
