Now however I moved to Tulsa and I love our cathedral. It recently was rennovated. 😃

to see the altar blogs.nd.edu/gregcrawford/files/2010/08/Holy-Family-Cathedral-in-downtown-Tulsa.jpg the pic is way too big for the post lol.

Now the parish I go to:

It is very stripped down however. 😦 I am hoping I will bug Father enough to incorporate more traditional looking things in the sanctuary. 😛 We don’t even have a crucifix behind the altar. We have a Risen Christ statue though. But not any hints really that we are Catholic at all.

Here’s an interior shot of La Sagrada Familia. I’m not sure what to make of this. On the one hand, it seems like all the traditional motifs are there: It certainly is very vertical, it has LOTS of iconography, and it’s all in stone, or at least looks like it, giving a sense or permanence.

On the other hand, it kind of looks like something out of LOTR, which is cool, but not necessarily appropriate for worship.

As far as I can remember, the architect was devout and seemed to have good reasons for choosing the style he did.

I think it looks awesome! Any shots of the interior?

On those links I provided. 😃 there’s some shots of the interior of the cathedral. But not our parish however. lol

This is the Church I received my sacraments of initiation and my absolute favorite. Reminds me of the old missions. I miss California sometimes.

pics of the church change on top of website they also have virtual tours too. It is pretty plain but still keeps to tradition a little.

actually, as traditional architectural styles go, I’ve never been a fan of these spanish and portuguese styles. The kind with facades incrusted with statues, sort of like a 3d version of a byzantine church where every inch of wall and ceiling is covered in icons (though that’s actually really nice).
I like the spanish/portuguese styles 🙂 and also byzantine. Anything but modern lol. 😦

The first pictures are of my parish “Sacred Heart”. It’s simple yet beautiful. When we are sitting inside, the wooden ceiling looks like we are inside the ark (boat shaped). The pictures don’t show the inside completely. Behind the altar, is a huge curtain which opens up on Christmas and Easter… you guess why 😃

We are currently getting an addition built and it’s in keeping with the style of our Church. The first pictures of the outside is the before… and the “drawn” picture is the after.

The modern one is St Luke and is supposed to be our parish. I do go there for confession on Saturdays, and attended the Divine Mercy service there and it WAS beautifully done. My problem is that it looks so sterile in there and that the choir is near the front altar… sometimes even have baptist revival style songs (oye!). Since leaving this parish, I’ve noticed that things are a little better because of new priests or maybe it was all ME!! 😉

A facebook friend of mine posted pictures of St Florian in Amtrack Michigan. I was absolutely in awe of it. It’s so lovely! All of my pictures get larger if you click on it.

Errrggghhhh, I don’t understand the modernist-Protestant-Middle-America-megachurch architecture… It gives the atmosphere of going to a dental appointment, not Mass!

My church THE *** ugliest ***building I’ve seen, REALLY, no exaggeration… 1960s-dated, red-and-brown colour scheme, little traditional influence in the structure itself, poor lighting… I guess in its day it was innovative.

The church I think that has the most potential for beauty is Westminster Cathedral, most of whose chapels are covered in Byzantine-style gold mosaics; the main domes, however, are still bare brick and mortar, as redecorating is expensive. When it’s fully refurbished, however, I think it will be a sight to see.

ROME (AP) - A new, modernist sculpture of Pope John Paul II is turning into a monumental bust.
The Vatican on Friday slammed the giant artwork outside Rome’s Termini Train Station, saying it doesn’t even resemble the late pontiff.
Some Romans and tourists say the bronze statue looks more like Italy’s wartime dictator Benito Mussolini than the widely beloved pope.
“How could they have given such a kind pope the head of a Fascist?” said 71-year-old Antonio Lamonica.
As he pondered the statue in the bustling square, his wife muttered: “It’s ugly. Really ugly. Very ugly.”
The artist, Oliviero Rainaldi, depicted the pontiff as if he is opening his cloak to embrace the faithful. But the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano said the effect of the nearly 5-meter (16-foot) statue bears “only a distant resemblance to the pope.”
Artistic intent aside, “we find ourselves in the piazza before a violent gash, like a bomb, that ends up assimilating a cloak that almost looks like a sentry box, topped by a head of a pope which comes off too roundish,” critic Sandro Barbagallo wrote in Friday’s L’Osservatore.
“Altogether, the result doesn’t seem to reach the intent,” the newspaper said, noting that it wasn’t alone in its criticism.
Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno, asked by APTN in an exclusive interview if the city might take down the statue, said public opinion would be considered.
“There’s an ancient saying: ‘Vox populi, vox dei,’” Alemanno said, using the Latin for “Voice of the people, voice of God.”
“And from this point of view we cannot help but take into consideration the opinion of the public,” he added. “If public opinion consolidates around a negative opinion, we’ll have to take that into consideration.”
L’Osservatore Romano acknowledged that the statue is a modern work and called the city’s initiative to erect it “praiseworthy,” but added that “the statue’s sin” is that it is “hardly able to be recognized.”
Rainaldi, in comments reported by the newspaper La Repubblica, said he was sorry his work had been misunderstood.
"I wasn’t thinking about resemblance, but rather a work that was able to synthesize, in the posture of the head and body and in the draping of the cloak, the way the pope went out into the world," Rainaldi was quoted as saying.

I actually got a little queazy looking at that statue. You know, like when you see something that’s supposed to be a human figure but isn’t quite right.

Sweet Mother of Jefferson Davis! That is horrible  Maybe this will be the last straw in trying to modernize the church’s artwork. hopefully Man I don’t which is worse the statue of JP2 or of the BVM in Los Angeles. (see previous posts)

Remember the old James Bond movies, with the rotund mob bosses in the one person portable saunas?
